Much of the day is watching gauges, monitoring SCADA screens, and transferring liquids, gases, wax, or charcoal between tanks while recording volumes in operational databases or Excel.
You also add chemicals, test solutions with handheld meters, tend auxiliary equipment (water treatment, refrigeration, heat exchangers), and fix small mechanical issues. At shift end you update the CMMS (computerized maintenance management system) with repairs and any incidents.
Learn SCADA right away — that’s the main control system for pumps, valves, and process alarms. You’ll also use a CMMS to log maintenance, and operational databases or Excel/Word to record tests and transfer amounts.
Basic Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) is used for scheduling, reports, and shift communication. If you can read SCADA trend graphs, enter work orders in CMMS, and keep a tidy Excel log, you’re in good shape.

A boom operator focuses on physically moving materials (transfer wax, liquids, gases), blending, adding chemicals, testing materials, and tending auxiliary equipment. You do hands-on tasks and light repairs.
A plant mechanic focuses mainly on heavy repairs and mechanical systems. A control-room operator spends most time on SCADA controlling entire processes remotely and making system-level decisions. Boom operators split time between SCADA and hands-on work.
You can use AI tools to help analyze trends from SCADA logs or suggest maintenance schedules, but only as a decision aid. Always verify recommendations against CMMS records, sensor readings, and supervisor guidance.
Do not let AI control valves, chemicals, or live processes. Use it for extracting anomalies from operational databases, estimating run times, or drafting reports in Word/Outlook, then confirm with physical checks and supervisors.
Situational awareness: continuously monitor your surroundings, gauges, and SCADA alarms so you spot leaks, unusual noises, or rising temperatures early. That skill ties together monitoring processes, identifying events, and troubleshooting.
Pair that with clear communication — log issues in CMMS, alert supervisors by Outlook or radio, and keep written records in Excel/Word. Those habits prevent small problems from becoming big ones.
