You usually start by checking transmitters, consoles, and logs. That means reading transmitter meters, inspecting antenna sites if you work for a station, and confirming program sources are live.

Most days mix routine monitoring (audio/video levels on consoles), scheduled maintenance (aligning signals, swapping tapes or digital files), and on-call fixes when a signal or equipment fails. You’ll also make logs and short reports about past and upcoming programs.

Expect Microsoft Windows and Office every day: Excel for transmitter logs and schedules, Outlook for coordination, and Word for reports. Some stations use Linux for automation and playout systems.

If you do technical drawings or equipment layouts you may use Autodesk AutoCAD. Cameras, consoles, and transmitter control panels are hardware you’ll operate alongside those programs.

Volunteer at a campus or community station to practice setting up gear, operating consoles, logging transmitters, and making dubs. Learning Excel and basic Windows or Linux system tasks helps a lot.

A broadcast technician focuses on operating and maintaining equipment: transmitters, antennas, consoles, cameras, and fixing signal problems. They also test and align audio/video signals and keep transmitter logs.

A production assistant helps with content production tasks: arranging sets, running errands, and helping talent. PAs rarely repair transmitters or align RF systems.

Use AI to draft routine reports, create checklists for transmitter maintenance, or summarize past logs for supervisors—always verify AI outputs against real measurements and equipment manuals.

Do not use AI to replace technical decisions: testing, aligning, and emergency fixes require hands-on measurements, human judgement, and following transmitter and safety procedures.
