Hands on the work13
Design computer hardware+
Produce schematic diagrams and a part list for the custom FPGA-based network interface card meeting throughput, power, and thermal targets, include block-level timing budgets and the PCB stack-up constraints for vendor quote.

Provide technical support+
Triage the support queue: reproduce the fault on the lab bench for the two failed units, record serial logs and voltages, identify whether it’s firmware, power or connector related, and prepare a short remediation plan to send to manufacturing by Wednesday.

Create schematics of hardware+
Produce complete PCB and enclosure schematics for the new sensor board, including connector pinouts, power and ground planes, component footprints and assembly notes, then save the drawings to the engineering library and notify Rajeev and the prototype shop by Thursday.

Engineering principles+
Summarise the applied engineering principles used in the prototype CPU board—signal integrity fixes, power sequencing, and thermal margin calculations—link to the design review minutes, cite the test evidence, and send to the approval board for sign-off next Wednesday.

Oversee manufacturing process+
Oversee the production line for the new board run: inspect assembly fixtures, confirm test jig programs match Gerber revisions, sign off the first 50 units or stop the line and report defects to manufacturing manager Claire by 4pm Thursday.

Specify power supply requirements and configuration, drawing on system performance expectations and design specifications.+
Specify the power subsystem for the rack: calculate peak and steady loads from the CPU, FPGA and peripherals, pick margins for inrush and efficiency, set voltage rails and filtering, and produce a parts list and configuration notes for procurement by Friday.

Analyze user needs+
Interview three pilot users for the new control panel: document workflows, pain points with current tools, required performance thresholds, and turn the findings into prioritized engineering requirements for the product manager Alex within three business days.

Specify power supply requirements+
Draft the power requirements sheet for the system: list nominal voltages, allowed ripple, transient tolerances, connectors and safety margins based on worst‑case load and supply sequencing, and circulate to procurement and test by Wednesday.

Can AI actually do this job?

the honest answer

It can

where it genuinely helps
  • Explain the theory behind the work
  • Draft, tidy and structure your writing
  • Rehearse a hard conversation before you have it
  • Build a study plan that fits your gaps

It cannot

where it stops, completely
  • Be in the room where a computer engineer actually works
  • Carry the responsibility when the call is wrong — that weight stays yours
  • Notice what no one wrote down: the hesitation, the thing left unsaid
  • Live with the outcome

Questions people actually ask

You’ll split time between design, testing, and meetings. Morning might be schematic work in AutoCAD or Visio, writing C++ or Java test code, then running hardware tests in the lab.

Afternoons are often prototype checks, recording test data in Excel, reporting results, and coordinating with manufacturing or firmware teams on Git and Linux systems.

Use AI to draft ideas or generate test scripts, but never let it replace verification. Always review generated schematics, code, or test plans against engineering principles and safety standards.

Keep sensitive schematics out of public tools. Use approved, local AI tools or enterprise accounts with access controls, and store final data and results in secured systems (Git, company servers).
