A distillation operator focuses on running and monitoring distillation units, tanks, pumps, valves, and the flow of oil products using SCADA/PLC systems and inventory tracking. You coordinate deliveries and tank receipts and work shifts tied to processing crude and products.
Chemical plant operators may handle different reactions and product types or more chemistry-heavy control. Lab technicians mainly run analyses and report results; as an operator you use those lab results to adjust process settings, but you’re primarily responsible for the plant-side controls and equipment.
Automation (PLCs and SCADA) already handles routine control, alarms, and data logging. AI can help predict equipment failures or flag unusual trends, but you still need a human to verify meter accuracy, clamp seals, start pumps, and coordinate shutdowns. Regulators and companies expect a trained operator to make safety-critical decisions.

Practical mechanical skills: starting pumps, opening valves, tightening connections, and basic lubrication. You should be comfortable reading meters, gauges, thermometers, and tallying inventory receipts and deliveries.
Digital skills: knowing how to read SCADA screens and PLC messages, and using Excel for operating logs and simple calculations. Good communication to coordinate shutdowns and work with maintenance is essential.
