You’ll split time between the field and the office. Morning might be a habitat or tree survey using tape measures, GPS, and field notebooks; afternoons are for analysing that data in Excel or ArcGIS (ESRI ArcGIS) and writing short reports or recommendations.

You also attend meetings with engineers or planners to explain environmental impacts, suggest protective methods, or update monitoring protocols. Some days you run models or build maps; other days you’re troubleshooting database entries in Microsoft Access or Git-managed projects.

Start with ESRI ArcGIS for mapping and Microsoft Excel for tables and basic statistics — both are used every week on most jobs. Learn to make maps, calculate area, and run simple charts in Excel.

Next, pick up Microsoft Access for medium databases and Git for version control if you’ll share code or datasets. Basic scripting (C# or another language) helps for custom tools, and Adobe Acrobat is useful for final reports.
