A grip moves and rigs the physical gear that shapes camera shots and lighting. Morning usually starts at craft service, then unloading the grip truck and checking gear lists against the call sheet.

Most of the day is building camera supports (dollies, cranes), setting up and striking lighting rigs, wrapping cables neatly, and keeping the truck organized. Work spikes when a scene needs complex movement or heavy rigging and slows during rehearsal or camera setups.

You need practical strength, balance, and endurance. Expect to lift 50–70 pounds often, climb ladders, and hold awkward positions while rigging. Good hand dexterity for knots, wrenches, and smooth cable coiling is essential.

Also need spatial thinking for building camera paths and safety awareness to judge load limits and anchor points. If you can carry heavy gear, tie reliable knots, and read a rigging spec, you’re ready to learn the rest.

Grips use a packing system: labeled cases, checklist sheets, and a set order in the truck so items are easy to find. Coiling cables correctly (over-under or figure-eight) prevents kinks and speeds deployment.

For rigs, use tagged hardware with working-load info, hang returned items on labeled racks, and update the inventory sheet after every strike. That organization cuts setup time and avoids lost gear when you move locations.
