You usually split time between design work, tests, and coordination. Morning might be CAD modeling in SolidWorks or AutoCAD, then an afternoon meeting with technicians to review tests or assembly issues.

You’ll also spend hours on analysis—running calculations for forces and thermodynamics, checking test data in Excel, and writing short reports. If you supervise others, you review technicians’ work and set priorities for the next build or maintenance task.

Start with SolidWorks or AutoCAD for mechanical design—SolidWorks is widely used for 3D parts and assemblies; AutoCAD is common for 2D drawings and shop layouts. Learn how to produce drawings and export them to manufacturing.

Also learn Microsoft Excel and basic Office skills for calculations, reports, and budgets. C++ is useful if you’ll do controls, simulation code, or robotics, but it’s secondary for straight mechanical design tasks.

Focus on core mechanics and math first: statics, dynamics, materials, and thermodynamics from a community college or online university course. Use bilingual textbooks or videos if needed, and practice technical English—terms like 'stress', 'strain', 'torque', and 'CAD'.

Learn SolidWorks or AutoCAD with project-based tutorials (make a simple bracket, then a gearbox). Practice Excel for calculations and write short progress reports to build technical writing.

Technicians usually follow procedures to build, test, or maintain equipment; mechanical engineers design systems, run analyses, and solve problems that prevent future failures. Engineers write drawings, calculate loads and energy losses, and recommend design changes.

You might still do hands-on tasks, especially early in your career, but engineers are expected to create specifications, estimate scopes and budgets, and perform root-cause failure analysis rather than only fix things.

AI can speed drafting, generate initial reports, or help write C++ snippets, but always check outputs against engineering principles and test data. AI is not a substitute for calculations, safety checks, or standards compliance.

Keep a clear workflow: use AI for drafts, then validate designs in SolidWorks/AutoCAD, run calculations in Excel, and confirm with physical testing. Document what the AI produced and who verified it.

Be able to read and create technical drawings in AutoCAD or SolidWorks and run basic calculations in Excel (forces, moments, simple thermodynamics). These let you communicate with machinists and check designs.

Also practice testing and inspection: set up simple experiments, record data, and start basic root-cause analysis. Communication matters—explain failures, recommend design changes, and write clear product reports.
