Collaborate with clients on system requirements+
Run a joint requirements session with Priya from Facilities and Marco the lead engineer to record service levels, rack space, power and cooling limits, and a draft wiring diagram, then produce a one-page feasibility summary for next Wednesday.

Implement or perform preventive maintenance, backup, or recovery procedures.+
Schedule and run preventive maintenance on edge switches and core routers this Thursday, verify backups completed to the offsite image server, run recovery drill on one branch router and log time-to-restore and any config drift.

Instruct in use of voice, video, and data communications systems.+
Run a two-hour hands-on session for the IT helpdesk on our voice, video and data systems next Tuesday, cover call routing, conferencing admin, VLAN and QoS basics, and distribute quick reference cards and a troubleshooting checklist.

Provide user support by diagnosing network and device problems and implementing technical or procedural solutions.+
Diagnose Alice Patel's intermittent VPN drop and the two affected office switches by reproducing the fault, capturing traffic during failure, testing device power and cabling, then implement the temporary workaround and write the RCA for the ticket before close of business today.

Estimate costs for system or component implementation and operation.+
Prepare a cost estimate for replacing the core router and three edge switches: list hardware, licensing, rack and cabling labour, six-year maintenance, and contingency, show line-item totals and annual OPEX, and circulate to procurement and the IT budget owner by Wednesday.

Supervise maintenance of telecommunications equipment.+
Schedule and supervise the quarterly service on rooftop microwave and the two comms cabinets: assign technicians, confirm spare parts list, require test reports and photos, and sign off repairs so uptime SLAs remain met before Friday's change freeze.

Prepare system activity and performance reports.+
Compile last month's system activity and performance report: include link utilisation, packet error rates, top talkers, incident summary with timestamps, and trend charts, then send the PDF to IT leadership and operations by Monday morning.

Implement controls to provide security for operating systems, software, and data.+
Implement access controls for the new server image: apply least-privilege groups, enable multi-factor authentication for admin accounts, harden default services, and run a compliance scan with remediation notes before the image is promoted to production on Thursday.

Can AI actually do this job?

the honest answer

It can

where it genuinely helps
  • Explain the theory behind the work
  • Draft, tidy and structure your writing
  • Rehearse a hard conversation before you have it
  • Build a study plan that fits your gaps

It cannot

where it stops, completely
  • Be in the room where a network engineer actually works
  • Carry the responsibility when the call is wrong — that weight stays yours
  • Notice what no one wrote down: the hesitation, the thing left unsaid
  • Live with the outcome

What the work pays

India

the occupation GROUP, not this job · PLFS via ILOSTAT 2025
  • ₹38,298 a month — the median for Professionals, the group this work sits in
  • India publishes pay by broad occupation group, so this covers many jobs besides this one. It is a shape, not a salary.
read this carefullyThese two numbers are not comparable and must not be converted into each other. One is a yearly figure for this job alone; the other is a monthly figure for a whole family of jobs. What travels between them is the pattern, not the amount: experience lifts pay almost everywhere.

Questions people actually ask

You usually split time between hands-on gear and paperwork. Morning: check system alerts, run performance tests (latency, packet loss) and review system activity reports in Microsoft Excel or Project. Afternoon: site inspections for new device locations, install or maintain routers, switches, wireless APs, or satellite equipment, and update Autodesk AutoCAD/Revit drawings for physical layouts.

Late day: support users via Microsoft Teams, diagnose network/device problems, apply backups or recovery, run PowerShell scripts on Linux or Windows, and document procedures for installations and maintenance. You also meet clients to confirm requirements or estimate costs for changes.

Expect Microsoft Teams for team and client calls, Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint for reports and status updates, and Microsoft Project for timelines and cost estimates. For documentation and site layout you’ll use Autodesk AutoCAD and Revit to place devices and conduit pathways.

On the system side you’ll work on Linux servers and Windows environments, using Microsoft PowerShell for automation and account/password administration. You’ll also test voice/video/data performance with dedicated network testing tools and update technical specs for telecommunications equipment.

AI can help parse logs, suggest troubleshooting steps, generate documentation drafts (installation steps, operating standards), and auto-generate configuration snippets for routers or PowerShell scripts. Use it to speed testing and reporting, but always validate outputs line-by-line against your lab or staging environment.

Never feed sensitive configs, passwords, or client data into public AI tools. Treat AI suggestions as first drafts — test changes in a controlled environment, and keep human review for security controls and final approvals.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) 2025 data, there were 179,740 network engineer-related jobs with a median annual wage of $134,050. The lowest tenth earned about $79,900, and the top tenth earned about $202,680.

Pay varies by region, employer, certifications, and experience. Use the BLS numbers to set expectations and compare local job listings to see where you fit in that range.
