You will split time between bench lab work and meetings. Mornings often start with reviewing experimental results in Microsoft Excel, checking instrument logs, and planning reactions for the day.

Afternoons go to preparing and mixing compounds, running quality control tests, and meeting engineers to translate a lab formula into a production process. Evenings can include writing reports in Microsoft Word or PowerPoint and updating SAP or Oracle records for materials.

Expect to use Microsoft Excel for data analysis, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint for reports and presentations, and Microsoft Visio for process flow diagrams. Manufacturing sites often use SAP or Oracle to track raw materials, batches, and inventory.

If you do modeling, you may use computational chemistry tools or Java-based programs, but the common everyday systems are Excel, Word, Visio, SAP and Oracle.

You translate lab formulas into step-by-step processes engineers can scale. That means providing exact quantities, temperatures, mixing times, and safety limits, often shown in Visio flowcharts or Excel worksheets.

You also attend regular meetings with engineers and operators to adjust conditions, ensure regulatory compliance, and update SAP with production changes so the plant can reproduce the process reliably.

You apply safety procedures every time you work: review material safety data sheets, confirm correct personal protective equipment, and follow approved protocols for hazardous reactions. You document deviations in Word and in SAP batch records.

You also run tests to identify hazardous substances, record environmental impact data, and support regulatory audits by providing QC test results and process descriptions tied to company and legal standards.

They overlap, but they’re different jobs. Analytical chemists focus on testing and identifying substances and running quality control. Research chemists create new molecules and fundamental studies.

Process chemists bridge both: they develop and scale lab discoveries into industrial processes, write production procedures, and work with engineers to ensure safety, yield, and repeatability.

Hands-on lab skills (preparing and mixing compounds, QC tests), solid Excel data analysis, and the ability to write clear SOPs in Word or Visio matter most. You also need to follow safety and regulatory procedures without prompting.

Communication with engineers and operators, basic computational or modeling familiarity, and experience entering data into SAP or Oracle will make you productive faster.
