Questions people actually ask

You split time between sketching and meetings. Mornings often review project status, check prototypes, and meet engineers or manufacturers to solve assembly or material problems.

Afternoons are for CAD work (AutoCAD, SolidWorks or similar), creating renderings in Illustrator or Photoshop, updating virtual models, and writing specs for prototypes or suppliers. You’ll also track testing, safety standards, and sometimes visit a factory or sit in on marketing/packaging discussions.

Start with Autodesk AutoCAD for 2D/3D technical drawings and Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for renderings and presentation art. Those three cover most day-to-day needs for design and client-facing visuals.

Later learn tools like Autodesk Revit if you work on larger assemblies, and a programming language like C# or C++ only if your product includes embedded software. Adobe InDesign and Acrobat are useful for delivering polished spec packs and manuals.

Use AI to speed tasks: generate concept sketches, summarize testing reports, or help draft user research questions. But always verify AI output—check dimensions, materials lists, and regulatory claims yourself.

Never let AI replace engineering calculations, safety assessments, or final design decisions. Treat AI as an assistant for drafts, not the authority. Keep version control and record who approved each change for traceability.

Pay varies by industry, location, and experience. Specialized skills (DFM, safety standards, embedded software) and leadership or project management duties push salaries toward the top end.

Get a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering, industrial design, or a related field. Take classes in materials, manufacturing processes, CAD (AutoCAD), and product testing. Build a portfolio with sketches, CAD models, and at least one physical prototype.

Side projects that show you can move from research to prototype to testing help a lot. Intern at a manufacturer or design firm to learn how engineers and manufacturers collaborate and to see cost and safety trade-offs.

Product design engineers bridge both roles. Compared with mechanical engineers, you focus more on user needs, branding, packaging, and manufacturability, not just internal mechanics or thermal/structural analysis.

Compared with industrial designers, you do more detailed engineering: material selection, safety standards, pricing, and supervising manufacture. You need both aesthetic sense (Illustrator/Photoshop) and practical engineering skills (AutoCAD, CAD models, prototypes).
