You split time between the control room, site visits, and office work. Mornings often start checking SCADA alarms, reviewing system logs, and confirming remote telemetry is intact.

Afternoons go to design or reports—editing AutoCAD Civil 3D or Bentley MicroStation drawings, running tests, liaising with clients, and updating Microsoft Excel trackers. Expect at least one site visit per week to supervise investigations or oversee implementation.

Learn AutoCAD (Autodesk AutoCAD) and AutoCAD Civil 3D first; you’ll use them for infrastructure blueprints, design revisions, and reviewing design drawings. Bentley MicroStation and ESRI ArcGIS are common at utility companies for mapping and topography.

Also get comfortable with Microsoft Excel and Office for technical reports, bids, and progress tracking, and Adobe Acrobat for sharing final drawings and contract documents.

SCADA engineers focus on supervisory control and data acquisition—keeping sensors, RTUs, and control software talking to the grid—plus infrastructure design elements like pipelines or substations. Civil engineers focus more on pure site design, soils, and structures.

Controls engineers focus on PLC logic and instrumentation. SCADA engineers sit between the two: you design and test systems, prepare bids and reports, and also supervise site investigations and system operation.

Start with a degree in electrical, control, or civil engineering or equivalent technical training. Entry roles: field technician for SCADA, CAD drafter, or site inspector where you learn telemetry, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and Excel on the job.
