Hands on the work11
Evaluate feasibility of software projects+
Assess feasibility for the new customer-analytics service: list required modules, estimate engineering effort in story points, identify technical risks and data dependencies, and recommend a go/no-go within two business days for Dev lead Maya and product manager Omar.

when the reply comes backPush once: ask it to sharpen the weakest part, and to say what it assumed. Helpful?
Program all kinds of software systems+
Deliver a technical implementation plan for the integrations roadmap: specify module interfaces, class responsibilities, data contracts, expected performance, and a two-sprint proof-of-concept to present to CTO Lina next Tuesday.

Collaborate with team members on development projects+
Schedule a two‑hour design session with Priya, Marcus and Jamal next Wednesday to pair on the new API, open the design doc, sketch request/response flows, assign implementation tasks and record decisions in the project wiki.

Ensure software security and data protection+
Harden the customer database by next Tuesday: review access logs for the last 30 days, rotate service credentials, apply the encryption-at-rest policy, and submit the updated security checklist to R&D leadership.

Release software updates and versions+
Coordinate the 1.4.0 rollout tonight: tag the release, push the build to staging, run the migration scripts, update the release notes, and flip the feature flags for the gradual rollout at 2200.

Plan and install new software systems+
Plan and install the new payment microservice cluster, produce a deployment plan with rollback steps, approve node sizing and network rules with Ops, then schedule the cutover for next Thursday after a dry run on Tuesday.

Debug and troubleshoot software errors+
Reproduce the null pointer crash from the nightly build, collect the failing trace, binary, and environment diff, run the minimal failing test, propose the code change and risk notes, and create a PR for review by Friday.

Prepare reports or correspondence concerning project specifications, activities, or status.+
Write the project status memo summarising sprint progress, outstanding risks, testing coverage, and next milestones, attach the failing test list and recent performance numbers, and email it to Priya in Product and Andre in Engineering by Tuesday noon.

Can AI actually do this job?

the honest answer

It can

where it genuinely helps
  • Explain the theory behind the work
  • Draft, tidy and structure your writing
  • Rehearse a hard conversation before you have it
  • Build a study plan that fits your gaps

It cannot

where it stops, completely
  • Be in the room where a software engineer actually works
  • Carry the responsibility when the call is wrong — that weight stays yours
  • Notice what no one wrote down: the hesitation, the thing left unsaid
  • Live with the outcome

What the work pays

two countries, two different measures

United States

this exact occupation · BLS 2025
  • $135,980 a year — the middle: half earn more, half earn less
  • The lowest tenth earn near $82,460; the top tenth near $214,670
  • 1,687,890 people employed in this occupation

India

the occupation GROUP, not this job · PLFS via ILOSTAT 2025
  • ₹38,298 a month — the median for Professionals, the group this work sits in
  • India publishes pay by broad occupation group, so this covers many jobs besides this one. It is a shape, not a salary.
read this carefullyThese two numbers are not comparable and must not be converted into each other. One is a yearly figure for this job alone; the other is a monthly figure for a whole family of jobs. What travels between them is the pattern, not the amount: experience lifts pay almost everywhere.

Questions people actually ask

You usually split time between coding, meetings, and reviewing other people’s work. Mornings often start with a 15–30 minute stand-up to sync on tasks, blockers, and immediate priorities.

The rest of the day mixes writing and testing code (feature branches, unit tests), doing code reviews, and fixing bugs that come from monitoring tools after deployment. Expect occasional time for documentation, user support, or planning with product and QA.

Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills: being able to reproduce errors, read logs, and step through code. That skill lets you fix bugs, improve performance, and support users quickly.

Combine that with knowing how to check logs and metrics after deployment (cloud logs, DynamoDB/Redshift dashboards) and you’ll resolve most common issues without long delays.
