Hands on the work11
Evaluate feasibility of software projects+
Assess the proposed project against current platform constraints, estimate development and operational effort, list required design patterns and tooling, and produce a one-page recommendation for the product manager by Wednesday.

Program all kinds of software systems+
Implement the new feature across the stack: write the service APIs, update the database access layer, add unit and integration tests, document the public endpoints and sample requests, then open the pull request and assign it to Priya and Carlos for review before Friday noon.

Support users in using software applications+
Help Anna in finance and Jamal in field support troubleshoot the crashing report viewer: reproduce the error with their accounts, capture logs and screenshots, apply the configuration rollback that fixed last month's outage, then confirm the viewer renders reports correctly for both by end of day Friday.

Utilise computer-aided software engineering tools+
Model the new authentication module to fit our microservice design: generate sequence diagrams and UML class sketches, produce a build script that compiles the module with CI flags, and draft the concise integration notes for the dev team before Tuesday stand-up.

Plan and install new software systems+
Plan the rollout for the new monitoring and authentication components across our three staging servers, list required packages, compatibility checks, downtime windows and rollback steps, and produce a deploy checklist for Friday's maintenance window.

Can AI actually do this job?

the honest answer

It can

where it genuinely helps
  • Explain the theory behind the work
  • Draft, tidy and structure your writing
  • Rehearse a hard conversation before you have it
  • Build a study plan that fits your gaps

It cannot

where it stops, completely
  • Be in the room where a systems engineer actually works
  • Carry the responsibility when the call is wrong — that weight stays yours
  • Notice what no one wrote down: the hesitation, the thing left unsaid
  • Live with the outcome

What the work pays

two countries, two different measures

United States

this exact occupation · BLS 2025
  • $135,980 a year — the middle: half earn more, half earn less
  • The lowest tenth earn near $82,460; the top tenth near $214,670
  • 1,687,890 people employed in this occupation

India

the occupation GROUP, not this job · PLFS via ILOSTAT 2025
  • ₹38,298 a month — the median for Professionals, the group this work sits in
  • India publishes pay by broad occupation group, so this covers many jobs besides this one. It is a shape, not a salary.
read this carefullyThese two numbers are not comparable and must not be converted into each other. One is a yearly figure for this job alone; the other is a monthly figure for a whole family of jobs. What travels between them is the pattern, not the amount: experience lifts pay almost everywhere.

Questions people actually ask

You usually split time between building new features and fixing live problems. Mornings often start with a stand-up meeting, task triage, and code reviews for errors or improvements.

Afternoons can be hands-on: writing code, running tests, deploying updates to EC2 or AWS CloudFormation templates, and monitoring performance post-deployment with logs. Evenings may include writing documentation or preparing status reports for the next day.

AI can speed up repetitive tasks: generate code snippets, suggest fixes during debugging, draft design specs, or summarize logs for monitoring. Use it to draft documentation or prepare reports.

But you must review everything AI produces. Validate logic, test code, and ensure security—especially before deploying to AWS services. Never trust AI for final decisions about system performance standards or access controls.
