Hands on the work15
Plan IT projects+
Draft the IT project plan for the payment migration with engineering lead Raj, include milestones, owner names, resource estimates and a go/no-go decision gate, circulate the plan to legal and finance by Wednesday and file the signed version in the project folder.

Coordinate project tasks+
Compile the task board for the frontend rewrite: list all engineering and QA tasks, assign owners and due dates, identify three dependencies for each sprint, notify owners of blockers, and send the live board link to the release manager by end of day.

Establish and execute a project communication plan.+
Create the project communication plan for the API rollout: define audiences, weekly update cadence, owners for escalation and status, message templates for outages, and schedule the stakeholder briefing with product, ops and security next Monday.

Identify need for initial or supplemental project resources.+
Review current sprint and contractor schedules, list gaps against the roadmap for the next quarter, propose required FTEs or contractor weeks with justifications, and send the resource request to procurement and the engineering manager by Friday.

Prepare project status reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.+
Collect metrics from the last three sprints, summarize scope changes, schedule variance, blockers and trends, create a one-page status with RAG indicators and recommended actions, and send it to the exec sponsor and product lead every Friday morning.

Assist engineers with their experiments+
Help the firmware team run their A/B hardware experiment this week: pull the latest test plan, create a shared results spreadsheet, add one row per run with timestamps and operator initials, and notify the engineers when the first five runs complete.

Participate in site visits+
Join the civil team on Friday's site walk at 10am, verify the installed telemetry matches the design drawings, photograph the three suspect junctions, record GPS coordinates and safety notes, and send the visit summary to the project lead by end of day.

Administer the collection of information+
Collect the outstanding sensor logs from the five field units, normalise timestamps to UTC, merge into one master CSV with device ID and latency columns, run basic quality checks for gaps, and hand the cleaned file to analytics for modeling.

Can AI actually do this job?

the honest answer

It can

where it genuinely helps
  • Explain the theory behind the work
  • Draft, tidy and structure your writing
  • Rehearse a hard conversation before you have it
  • Build a study plan that fits your gaps

It cannot

where it stops, completely
  • Be in the room where a technical program manager actually works
  • Carry the responsibility when the call is wrong — that weight stays yours
  • Notice what no one wrote down: the hesitation, the thing left unsaid
  • Live with the outcome

What the work pays

two countries, two different measures

United States

this exact occupation · BLS 2025
  • $116,580 a year — the middle: half earn more, half earn less
  • The lowest tenth earn near $55,940; the top tenth near $188,470
  • 435,370 people employed in this occupation

India

the occupation GROUP, not this job · PLFS via ILOSTAT 2025
  • ₹38,298 a month — the median for Professionals, the group this work sits in
  • India publishes pay by broad occupation group, so this covers many jobs besides this one. It is a shape, not a salary.
read this carefullyThese two numbers are not comparable and must not be converted into each other. One is a yearly figure for this job alone; the other is a monthly figure for a whole family of jobs. What travels between them is the pattern, not the amount: experience lifts pay almost everywhere.

Questions people actually ask

You start by checking status: read overnight alerts from Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Amazon Redshift dashboards, then review project tickets in your tracker. Spend mornings coordinating with engineers about deployments, experiments, site visits, or blocked tasks; afternoons are for meetings with customers, updating the project communication plan, and writing the project status report.

You’ll also do planning: update the implementation plan with cost-benefit or ROI notes, perform any needed risk assessments, and identify supplemental resources (people, tools, or cloud capacity like DynamoDB or Redshift nodes). Finish by filing documents and making sure technical files are current.

Use AI for drafting project status reports, summarizing logs, or generating meeting notes—but never as the single source for technical decisions. Always validate AI outputs with engineers and check sensitive data before uploading to third-party tools.

Keep customer data out of public AI services unless you have explicit permission. For risk assessments and implementation plans, treat AI suggestions as first drafts, then confirm costs, ROI numbers, and technical feasibility with the team and security policies.

A Technical Program Manager (TPM) coordinates the project plan, communication, risk assessments, and resource needs. You focus on schedules, status reports, ROI analyses, and making sure engineers can do their work.

A Project Engineer (or engineer lead) does hands-on technical design, runs experiments, and owns code or system configurations (for example tuning Cassandra or Redshift). TPMs liaise with engineers, handle clerical and admin tasks, and ensure documentation and monitoring are in place.

Learn core AWS services and one database: start with online AWS fundamentals and a course on Amazon Redshift or DynamoDB. Practice by setting up a small project: deploy a test service, write a short implementation plan with ROI, and run a simple risk assessment.

Also practice the non-technical parts: write a project communication plan template, prepare a sample weekly project status report, and get comfortable with Ansible basics for automation and Adobe Acrobat for document control. These artifacts show you can manage both tech and admin tasks.

Clear technical communication. You must explain technical issues (like a Redshift query performance problem or Cassandra replication failure) in plain terms to customers and executives, and in technical terms to engineers.

That means writing crisp status reports, running focused meetings, and making trade-offs visible (cost, ROI, risk). Clear communication reduces misunderstandings, speeds decisions about resources, and helps engineers deliver on schedule.
