Afternoons often include site inspections, directing surveying or staking crews, and meeting with city planners. Some days you present maps in ArcGIS or PowerPoint at public hearings; other days you write specs in Word or update the project schedule in Microsoft Project.

Start with AutoCAD and AutoCAD Civil 3D because employers expect plan-drafting skills for design and staking layout. Also learn Microsoft Excel for cost estimates and basic traffic modelling tables.

Next add ArcGIS for mapping, and Microsoft Word/PowerPoint for reports and public hearings. Basic Python is useful for data processing, and familiarity with Microsoft Project helps on jobs that involve schedule or contract administration.

You use models to forecast passenger demand by building trip tables that show origins, destinations, and times. That process includes trip chaining (linking individual trips into tours) and estimating auto ownership and location choices to predict volumes.

Results feed traffic management plans and design decisions. Outputs are used in ArcGIS for mapping and in reports for environmental impact assessments and public hearings.
