Join an existing channel

I need to join the on-call channel for payments. Find and join #oncall-payments, introduce myself with: Hi — I’m Sara from backend, taking over cover this week. I’ll monitor alerts from 9am–5pm local. Ping me for immediate help or escalate to @Ravi after 5pm.

Before I join #oncall-payments, make my join message clear to the team: say who I am, what hours I’ll cover, the primary contact for escalations, and any constraints. I’m joining #oncall-payments to cover daytime shifts but I can’t do nights. I don’t want to sound like I’m dodging responsibility or make the rotation harder. What wording signals I’m reliable for my window, sets clear escalation, and avoids making me look like I’m avoiding team duties?

I habitually join on-call channels without a clear intro, so people assume I’m always on. That creates confused escalations and overload. What single habit change should I adopt so every time I join an on-call or coverage channel I immediately state hours, escalation, and runbook ownership, preventing misrouted alerts?
