Open your PDF file in Adobe Acrobat.
Click the Comment button in the toolbar to display the commenting tools.
Select the annotation tool you want to use, such as Note, Highlight, Text Box, or Draw.
Click on the PDF page where you want to add your comment or annotation.
Type your comment or draw your annotation as needed.
Click away from the annotation or press Escape to save your comment or annotation.
You can use multiple annotation types in one session, such as highlighting text and adding sticky notes for detailed feedback.
This runs in the Acrobat app - there is no separate API for this task.
Highlighting text simply marks important parts of the document with a color, drawing attention to it without adding much detail. A text box, however, lets you write longer explanations or specific feedback in a separate box that can be placed anywhere on the page. Use highlighting for quick emphasis, and text boxes for detailed notes or questions.
You should sanitize your PDF to make sure no hidden data or review notes leak out. Comments and markups are often stored in a separate layer that might still be recoverable, even if they don't seem visible. Sanitize removes all these hidden elements completely, protecting your privacy and ensuring only the final, intended content is shared. This prevents accidental sharing of sensitive feedback.
Drawing markup tools let you draw shapes, lines, or freehand marks directly on your PDF. You would use them when you need to circle a specific image, underline a diagram, or point to an area that needs attention without using text. For example, an architect might use them to highlight a section of a blueprint that needs revision. They are useful for visual feedback.
