Highlighting covers text with a transparent color, making it stand out as if with a marker. Underlining draws a line directly beneath the text. Both are ways to mark important information, but highlighting is more visible for quick scanning, while underlining is more subtle. You might use highlighting for key points and underlining for supporting details.
You should sanitize your PDF to protect your privacy and prevent accidental information leaks. Comments, highlights, and other review notes are saved as a separate layer in the PDF. If you don't sanitize the file, others might see your internal notes, draft comments, or even hidden data. Sanitizing removes all these layers, ensuring only the final content is shared. This is important for legal documents or sensitive information.
When you highlight text on a scanned document, you are adding a visual layer on top of the image. The original text in the scan is not changed or made editable by highlighting. To make text in a scanned document editable, you would first need to run Optical Character Recognition (OCR) on the PDF. OCR converts the image of text into actual, selectable text, which can then be highlighted or edited more precisely.
