Open your PDF file in Adobe Acrobat.
Click the Comment button in the toolbar to display the commenting tools.
Select the annotation tool you want to use, such as Note, Highlight, Text Box, or Draw.
Click on the PDF page where you want to add your comment or annotation.
Type your comment or draw your annotation as needed.
Click away from the annotation or press Escape to save your comment or annotation.
You can use multiple annotation types in one session, such as highlighting text and adding sticky notes for detailed feedback.
This runs in the Acrobat app - there is no separate API for this task.
Highlighting puts a colored background over the text, making it stand out clearly. Underlining draws a line beneath the text. Both are ways to mark important parts of a document, but highlighting is more visible. You choose which one to use based on how much you want the text to pop out.
Comments and markups are a separate layer on the PDF. If the person viewing the PDF does not have a compatible PDF viewer, or if the PDF was 'flattened' or 'sanitized' before sending, the comments might not be visible. Always make sure to save the PDF with comments intact or tell the receiver to use a full PDF reader like Adobe Acrobat.
You should use one of the 'drawing markup' tools. These tools let you draw shapes like circles, arrows, or lines directly on your PDF. Go to the 'Comment' tools and look for the drawing options to select the shape you need.
Reaction emojis allow you to quickly show your feelings or agreement with an existing comment in a shared review. Instead of typing a new comment, you can use an emoji like a thumbs-up or a smiley face. This makes feedback faster and clearer for everyone collaborating on the document.
