Redacting permanently removes the text or image data from the PDF file, making it unrecoverable. Drawing a black box, however, only covers the content visually. The original text remains underneath and can be easily copied and pasted, revealing the sensitive information. Always use the dedicated Redaction tool for true removal.
Redaction removes only visible content. If your scanned document has hidden data like metadata or layers from previous edits, these will not be removed by redaction alone. After redacting the visible parts, you must also use the 'Sanitize' feature in Acrobat to strip away any hidden data. Always verify by searching and copying content.
Using consistent reason codes helps your team understand why certain information was removed. For example, 'PRIVACY' or 'CONFIDENTIAL'. This practice makes it easier for others to review the redacted document and ensures everyone follows the same rules. It also helps maintain a clear record for legal or compliance purposes.
