Open the PDF file you want to modify in Adobe Acrobat.
Go to the Tools pane and select Edit PDF.
In the secondary toolbar, click Watermark or Background depending on what you want to remove.
Choose Remove from the dropdown menu.
If prompted, confirm that you want to remove the watermark or background.
To remove watermarks or backgrounds from multiple files, go to Tools, select Action Wizard, create a new action, add the Remove Watermark or Remove Background step, and run the action on your files.
Best practiceIf you have many files, using Action Wizard can save significant time compared to removing watermarks or backgrounds one by one.
You can quickly remove a watermark or background from your PDF by using the Edit PDF tool and selecting the appropriate removal option.
This runs in the Acrobat app - there is no separate API for this task.
In Adobe Acrobat, you can remove a watermark by opening your PDF, going to the ‘Edit’ or ‘Tools’ menu, and choosing the option to remove watermarks. This will delete the watermark from all pages where it appears.
A watermark is usually text or an image placed over the content to show ownership or status, while a background is a color or image behind the main content. Both can make documents harder to read or use.
People often remove backgrounds to make text easier to read, reduce printing costs, or create a cleaner look for presentations or submissions.
Some online tools and other PDF editors may let you remove watermarks, but Adobe Acrobat is one of the most reliable ways to do it safely and completely.
It depends on why you are removing the watermark. If you own the document or have permission, it is usually fine. Removing watermarks from copyrighted material without permission may not be allowed.
