Open the PDF form you want to fill in Adobe Acrobat.
Select the Fill & Sign tool from the right pane or the Tools menu.
Click in a form field to activate it, then type your information.
For checkboxes or radio buttons, click directly on the box or circle to select your choice.
Continue entering information in all required fields.
When finished, save the filled form by choosing File > Save or Save As.

You might not be able to save your typed information in Adobe Reader because of how the form was created. The form's owner needs to save it as a 'Reader-Extended PDF' to allow saving in the free Reader. If it's not extended, Reader won't let you save the filled data. This is a permission setting from the form creator, not a bug in Adobe Reader itself.
An interactive form field is a specific area, often highlighted, where you can click and type directly. A 'flat' form, however, does not have these special fields. For a flat form, you use the Fill & Sign tool to manually place text boxes anywhere on the document, making it appear as if you typed directly onto the page.
