Bates Numbering is a method to stamp unique, sequential numbers on every page across a set of documents. It's crucial for legal documents because it creates a clear, unchangeable record of each page. This helps lawyers, courts, and other parties easily refer to specific pages, ensuring everyone is looking at the same information and preventing confusion or disputes over document order.
No, adding Bates Numbers will not change the page numbers shown in Acrobat's navigation panel. Bates Numbering stamps a visible number directly onto the page content, like an ink stamp, for legal indexing purposes. The page numbers in the navigation panel are 'page labels' which are different; they only change how Acrobat displays the page count internally, not the content of the page itself. You can have both Bates Numbers and separate page labels.
You might not find the Bates Numbering option because it is only available in Adobe Acrobat Pro. If you are using Adobe Acrobat Standard or a free reader, this feature will not be visible. You need the Pro version to access and use Bates Numbering for your documents.
If you add or remove pages after applying Bates Numbers, the existing Bates Numbers on the other pages will not automatically re-adjust. Bates Numbers are permanent stamps. You would need to remove the existing Bates Numbers first and then re-apply them to the entire document set. This ensures the numbering remains sequential and accurate across all pages, including the newly added or remaining ones.
