Before I circulate the draft to the foundation, make it compelling for funders. Put the projected milestones and the expected outputs at the top, show the three-year budget as annual cash needs, translate technical benefits into farmer outcomes, and flag any risks that would make a reviewer hesitate to fund year two.

I shortened the impact paragraph to fit the funder’s page limit but the lab worries it loses the translational angle. Who at the foundation will actually read this, what am I risking by keeping the longer version, and is the best next move to attach a one-paragraph lay summary as a separate document so reviewers and internal approvers both get what they need?
