Chapter 27 — Paragraph Architecture
What holds a paragraph together?
A paragraph is one idea, developed, in an order a reader can feel. One sentence often states the idea; the others give examples, reasons, facts and detail; and when the idea changes, a new paragraph begins. Run the Paragraph Check - Topic, Development, Order, Boundary - then decide: keep it, develop it, reorder it or split it. Covers topic sentences stated and implied, unity, order by time, place, importance and general to specific, expository and persuasive paragraphs, cause and effect, comparison, definition, introductions and conclusions, linking paragraphs, notes to paragraph, summarising, revising, exam paragraph tasks and close reading, for ages 5 to 19.
