Verbs: Types, Tenses & Subject–Verb Agreement

A verb shows action or being — what someone or something does or is. This guide covers verb types, all the tenses, helping verbs and subject–verb agreement, with clear examples, for learners aged 5 to 19.

What is a verb?

A verb is a doing word. It tells you what someone or something does.

Every sentence needs at least one verb. Without a verb, the sentence just sits there. Nothing happens.

The Mime Test
Can you act it out with your body? Then it's probably a verb. Try miming 'jump'. Easy. Now try miming 'the'. You can't — because 'the' isn't a doing word.

When you read a sentence, ask yourself: What is happening here? The answer is the verb.

Let's go deeper. Verbs show action you can see and action you feel inside. Both kinds are verbs.

Action you can see: run, jump, dance, swim, write, climb, throw. You can watch someone do these. You can draw a picture of the action.

Action you feel inside: think, dream, wonder, love, hope, remember. You can't see these with your eyes, but they're still doing words. Your brain is doing something when you think. Your heart is doing something when you love.

Try this: Close your eyes and think of your favorite place. Right now, your brain is thinking. That's a verb — an invisible action, but real. Now open your eyes and look at something nearby. 'Look' is a verb too — your eyes are doing the looking.

The doing-eye sees both kinds. If it's something a person, animal, or thing does, it's a verb.

Picture a sentence as a little movie. The verb is the play button. Without it, the movie pauses. Press play, and someone runs or laughs or sleeps. The verb makes the frames move.

Some verbs happen once. Jump. Done. Other verbs keep going. Sleep, think, live. Both are action verbs. The verb doesn't care how long the action lasts.

Here's the tricky part. Some words can be nouns or verbs depending on their job in the sentence. 'Run' is a verb in 'I run every morning' — I'm doing the running. But 'run' is a noun in 'My morning run makes me happy' — now 'run' names the thing I do, like naming an event. The word hasn't changed. The job has. How do you tell? Ask: is this word doing something, or is it naming something? In 'I run', the word 'run' is doing — it's the action. In 'My morning run', the word 'run' is naming — it's a thing, the event. At Discover level, just know this can happen. We won't test you on it yet. Chapter 1 taught you the naming side (nouns). This chapter teaches the doing side (verbs). Sometimes the same word does both jobs in different sentences. That's English being efficient.

Can a verb be just one letter? Yes. The verb 'I' in old English poetry sometimes shrinks to a single sound, but in modern English, our shortest common verb is two letters: 'is'. Still, verbs don't have to be long to be powerful. In the sentence 'Go!', that's a complete sentence — one word, one verb. The subject (you) is hidden but understood. The verb 'go' does all the work. Short verbs pack big action. 'Run. Jump. Sit. Stop.' Each one is a full command, a tiny engine making something happen. When you start noticing verbs everywhere, you realize: every sentence, no matter how short or long, has at least one doing word holding it together. The verb is the spine.

Some words name and do. 'Run' is a verb in 'Dogs run fast' but a noun in 'The morning run was nice'. The word hasn't changed; the job has. Chapter 1 owns the naming side. This chapter owns the doing side.

  1. Use the mime test first. If you can act out the word with your body, it's likely a verb
  2. Ask yourself: what is happening in this sentence?
The answer is almost always the verb. (3) Don't be fooled by the doer. In 'Riya laughs', Riya is the person doing the action. The action itself is 'laughs'. (4) Check the time. Verbs change shape to show when something happened. 'Walk' becomes 'walked'. 'Run' becomes 'ran'. That shape-shifting is a verb clue. (5) Read the sentence out loud and listen for the doing word. Your ear often catches what your eye misses. Trust the doing-eye — it gets sharper every time you practice.
You can now spot the verb in any sentence. The doing-eye opens when you ask: what is happening here? Every sentence needs at least one verb to make it move. Action verbs show what someone or something does — run, jump, eat, think, laugh, sleep. Some actions you can see with your eyes. Others you feel inside. Both are verbs. Use the mime test: if you can act it out, it's a verb. Don't confuse the doer with the doing. In 'Kofi runs fast', Kofi is the doer, and 'runs' is the doing. The verb makes the sentence go. Without it, nothing happens. You've learned the most important doing words in English — the action verbs that fill your day.

Verbs that connect

A linking verb connects a subject to what it is or how it feels.

Linking verbs join the subject to a word that tells more about it. They build a bridge.

The most common linking verbs are forms of be:

Other linking verbs show how something seems or becomes:

Try the draw test. Can you draw is? No. Can you draw seems? No. These verbs connect — they don't show action you can mime.

Think of a linking verb as a bridge. On one side is the subject. On the other side is what the subject is or feels. The verb is the bridge connecting them. The cat is soft. The bridge is carries you from cat to soft.

Some words can be action verbs OR linking verbs depending on the sentence. Smells in The dog smells the bone is action. Smells in The rose smells sweet is linking. The first shows the dog doing something. The second connects rose to sweet.

Sometimes a linking verb connects the subject to another noun, not just an adjective. He became a teacher. Became is still a linking verb — it connects he to teacher. The subject and the noun after the verb are the same person. That's the test: same thing on both sides of the bridge.

The verb grew can be action or linking. The plant grew means the plant got bigger — action you can see. The plant grew tall means the plant became tall — linking. In the second sentence, grew connects plant to tall. You can't draw grew in that sentence — it's a bridge, not an action.

Some linking verbs look like they show action: appears, seems, feels, looks. But in linking sentences, they connect instead of doing. She looks tired — looks connects she to tired. She looks at the sky — looks shows action. Check what comes after the verb. If it's a word describing the subject, the verb is probably linking.

1. Run the draw test on every verb. If you can't draw it, check if it's linking. 2. Look for is, am, are, was, were first — these are linking verbs almost always. 3. After a linking verb, you usually find a word that describes the subject or renames it. 4. If the sentence has no action you can mime, the verb is probably linking.

You can now spot linking verbs. You know they connect a subject to what it is or seems. You know the draw test: if you can't draw the verb, it might be linking. Is, am, are, was, were, seems, looks, feels, tastes, sounds, smells, becomes — these are your linking verbs. They build bridges. Every sentence needs them.

Helper verbs

A helper verb is a verb that travels with another verb. The other verb is called the main verb. Together, they make one complete verb-idea.

The helper adds meaning. It tells you about time, about ability, about certainty. The main verb tells you the action.

Some helper verbs you will see all the time:

The helper verb always comes first. The main verb comes after it. Sometimes a small word like not sits between them:

Both verbs are important. Both pass the doing test. But only one is the helper.

Think of the helper verb as the front wheel of a bicycle and the main verb as the back wheel. Both wheels move. But the front wheel steers — it adds direction, time, certainty. The back wheel does the main pushing. Together, they make the bicycle go.

Sometimes you will see three verbs holding hands: She will have finished by then. 'Will' and 'have' are both helpers. 'Finished' is the main verb. You do not need to name all the helpers yet. Just notice: more than one helper can travel together.

Helper verbs like 'is' or 'has' can also work alone in some sentences. 'She is happy.' Here, 'is' is a linking verb, not a helper. 'He has a dog.' Here, 'has' means 'owns', not 'helper'. How do you tell? If another verb follows, the first one is the helper. If no other verb follows, it is working alone as a linking verb or a main verb.

Sometimes the helper and the main verb are separated by a small word like 'not' or 'never'. 'She can not swim.' 'They have never eaten sushi.' The helper is still 'can' or 'have'. The main verb is still 'swim' or 'eaten'. The word in the middle does not break the partnership. The two verbs still hold hands across the gap.

At this age, you do not need to memorize lists of helper verbs. Just notice when two verbs travel together. The first one usually helps. The second one does the main work. As you read more, you will start to see the same helpers again and again: can, will, has, is, was, have, had, would, could, should, must, may, might. They all add meaning to the main verb.

1. When you see two verbs next to each other, ask: which one adds meaning (time, ability, certainty)? That one is the helper. 2. The helper always comes first in the pair. 3. If a small word like 'not' sits between them, ignore it — the two verbs are still partners. 4. Both the helper and the main verb are verbs. Name them both. 5. Practice with real sentences you hear every day. Can you come? She is reading. They have left. Spot the helper. Spot the main verb.

You can now spot three kinds of verb: doing verbs that show action, connecting verbs that link ideas, and helping verbs that travel with a main verb. Helper verbs add meaning — time, ability, certainty. The main verb shows the action. Together they make one complete verb-idea. When you see two verbs holding hands, you know which one helps and which one does the main work. Your doing eye is sharp. You catch verbs everywhere.

What happened?

When something already happened, we change the verb. Often we add -ed.

For example:

Some verbs change completely!

To show something happened in the past, we use the past tense. Many verbs become past tense by adding '-ed'. For example, 'talk' becomes 'talked' and 'jump' becomes 'jumped'.

But some verbs are special! They change completely. We have to remember these. For example:

These special verbs are called irregular verbs.

Imagine a movie. First, you see the action happening now. Then, the movie ends. The past tense is like the end of the movie – it's already finished.

Some words like 'cut', 'hit', and 'put' stay the same in the past tense! 'I cut the paper yesterday' means you already cut it, even though the verb looks the same.

Remembering all the verbs that change completely can be tricky! There are many of them, and they don't follow a simple rule. It takes practice to learn them all. Don't worry if you make mistakes – keep practicing, and you'll get better!

Sometimes, the past tense can be used to talk about things that are not real! For example, 'I wish I had wings' uses 'had' (past tense of 'have'), but you don't really have wings!

Sometimes, we use 'was' or 'were' to talk about the past. 'I was happy' means you were happy in the past. 'Was' and 'were' are also past tense verbs!

1. Look for '-ed' at the end of the verb. 2. Remember the special verbs that change completely. 3. Practice using past tense verbs when you talk about yesterday. 4. Ask someone to check your sentences to see if you used the past tense correctly.

Now you know how to change verbs to show that something already happened! You learned about adding '-ed' and the special verbs that change completely. You can now tell stories about the past and share what you did yesterday. You are becoming a verb expert!

What will happen?

We use 'will' to talk about the future. It shows something hasn't happened yet. 'Will' goes before the verb.

The verb after 'will' never changes!

When we use 'will', the verb that follows stays in its base form. This means it doesn't change, even if we're talking about he, she, or it.

For example:

Notice how the verb 'read' never changes after 'will'. It's always 'will read', not 'will reads' or 'will reading'.

Imagine a train. 'Will' is the engine pulling the verb along. The engine (will) always comes first, and the verb stays the same on the journey.

Sometimes, we shorten 'will' to 'll'. For example, 'I will go' becomes 'I'll go'. This is a quick way to say the same thing. 'She will dance' becomes 'She'll dance'.

It can be tricky to remember that the verb after 'will' never changes. You might want to add an -s if you're talking about 'he', 'she', or 'it', like 'He will sings'. But 'will' already shows that it's the future, so the verb stays in its base form. Practice will help you remember!

Even though 'will' usually talks about the future, sometimes we use it to ask someone to do something right now. For example, 'Will you please close the door?' This is a polite way of asking for help in the present.

Sometimes, we use other words like 'going to' to talk about the future. 'I am going to eat' means the same as 'I will eat'. But for now, we're focusing on using 'will'.

You've learned how to use 'will' to talk about things that will happen in the future! You know that 'will' is a helper verb and that the main verb stays the same after 'will'. You can now make sentences like 'I will play' and 'She will read' to describe future actions. You can also spot mistakes when people change the verb after 'will'.

Verbs that reach out

A transitive verb is an action verb that passes its action to an 'object'. The object is the person or thing that receives the action. Look at 'Mira ate the mango.' The verb is 'ate'. Ask 'ate what?' and the sentence gives you the answer: 'the mango'. That answer is the object. Without it, the sentence feels unfinished — 'Mira ate' leaves you waiting. The action of eating reaches out to the mango. That reaching-out is what makes 'ate' transitive. Not all action verbs are transitive. 'The baby cried' is complete without an object. You can't cry something. But you can eat something, kick something, throw something. Those verbs need an object to complete their meaning. The test always works: say the verb, ask 'what?' or 'whom?', and if the sentence answers clearly, the verb is transitive.

Transitive verbs are everywhere. 'He wrote a letter.' Ask 'wrote what?' — a letter. 'She opened the door.' Ask 'opened what?' — the door. 'They watched the match.' Ask 'watched what?' — the match. In each case, the action travels from the doer to the receiver. The receiver is always a noun or pronoun — a person, place, or thing. Sometimes the object is a person: 'Rohan helped Priya.' Ask 'helped whom?' — Priya. The test works with people too. Not every word after the verb is the object. 'She ran quickly' has no object because 'quickly' describes how she ran, not what she ran. The object must answer 'what?' or 'whom?' after the verb. If it doesn't answer that question, it's not the object. When you find the object, you've proven the verb is transitive.

Picture a verb as a hand reaching out from the doer. If the hand grabs something — an object — the verb is transitive. If the hand stays empty, the verb stands alone.

Some verbs can be transitive in one sentence and intransitive in another. 'She reads every night' — no object. 'She reads the newspaper' — reads what? The newspaper. Same verb, different job.

The trickiest verbs are the ones that feel complete even without an object, but CAN take one. 'He ate' sounds fine on its own, but 'He ate rice' is also correct. Both are valid sentences. The first uses 'ate' intransitively — the action stays with the doer. The second uses 'ate' transitively — the action reaches out to rice. The verb didn't change spelling; the sentence structure changed. This dual nature confuses learners. The test still works: if you CAN ask 'what?' and get an answer from the sentence, the verb is being used transitively in that moment. If the sentence doesn't provide an answer, the verb is intransitive. The same verb can switch roles depending on what the sentence needs. Context decides.

Watch this: 'She broke.' That sentence is complete if she's a wave crashing on the shore or a voice cracking. 'Broke' stands alone — intransitive. But 'She broke the glass' — now 'broke' reaches out to the glass. Same verb, same spelling, opposite behavior. The object changes everything. Or take 'run'. 'The engine runs' — no object, complete. 'She runs a company' — runs what? A company. Object present, verb now transitive. The verb's job shifts based on the sentence's need. This flexibility is a feature of English, not a bug. Learning to spot the shift is part of mastering verbs.

Some words name AND do. 'Run' is a doing word, but 'a morning run' is a thing. Watch the job, not the spelling. Chapter 1 owns the naming side of these crossover words. Here we care only about the doing job — the verb.

  1. Find the verb first — the action word
  2. Ask 'what?' or 'whom?' right after it
  3. If the sentence gives you a clean noun or pronoun answer, you've found the object and proven the verb is transitive
(4) If the question doesn't make sense or the sentence doesn't answer it, the verb is intransitive. (5) Remember: not every word after the verb is the object. Only nouns or pronouns that receive the action count. (6) Practice on real sentences you read or hear. The pattern becomes automatic with repetition.
You can now pin down which verbs reach out to an object. The test — ask 'what?' or 'whom?' — works every time. Transitive verbs need that object to complete their meaning. Without it, the sentence feels unfinished. You've learned to spot the object, distinguish it from other words that follow the verb, and recognize that some verbs can switch between transitive and intransitive depending on the sentence. This skill sharpens your sentence sense. You no longer guess — you test. The reaching-out verbs don't fool you anymore.

Verbs that stand alone

An intransitive verb completes its meaning without needing an object. The action ends at the doer. She sleeps. The dog barked. The sun rises. Each verb finishes its sentence right there. Nothing follows to receive the action. Test it this way: ask 'what?' or 'whom?' right after the verb. If no clean answer comes, the verb is intransitive. She sleeps what? Nothing. The dog barked what? Nothing. The sun rises what? Silence. The verb stands alone. Common intransitive verbs include: sleep, rise, fall, arrive, depart, appear, vanish, wait, listen, travel, swim, dance, smile, exist. You use these all the time. Now you see the pattern underneath.

Some verbs always stand alone. 'Sleep' never takes an object in normal use — you can't sleep something. 'Arrive' doesn't grab a receiver — you arrive, full stop. Other verbs wear both jackets depending on the sentence. She runs — intransitive. She runs the company — transitive. Same verb, different job. At Practice level, you don't need to memorize which verbs are dual-use. Just watch what comes after the verb. If the verb grabs a receiver, it's transitive in that sentence. If it doesn't, it's intransitive in that sentence. The verb's job changes with the sentence around it. The stand-alone test stays the same: ask 'what?' after the verb. Clean silence means intransitive. The verb finishes its work without passing the action forward.

Picture a runner crossing the finish line. The running ends at the line — nothing receives the running. That's intransitive. Now picture a runner passing a baton to the next runner. The action moves forward — transitive. Stand-alone verbs cross their own finish line.

When a verb is intransitive, nothing after the verb receives the action. The verb might be followed by an adverb, a prepositional phrase, or nothing at all. But no direct object. That keeps the verb in the stand-alone family.

The dual-use verbs confuse learners most. 'Run', 'walk', 'sing', 'eat', 'read' — all of these can stand alone or reach out. She sings — intransitive. She sings a song — transitive. The verb itself doesn't tell you. The sentence structure tells you. At Practice age, you don't memorize a list of dual-use verbs. Instead, you test every sentence fresh. Ask 'what?' after the verb. If a noun or pronoun answers and it receives the action, transitive. If silence or an adverb or a prepositional phrase answers, intransitive. Mandarin transfer adds another layer. In Mandarin, some verbs that are intransitive in English require an object. 'Eat' in Mandarin is usually 'chi fan' (eat rice), not bare 'chi'. Mandarin speakers sometimes add unnecessary objects in English — 'I will eat food' when 'I will eat' is enough.

Some verbs look like they should take an object but don't. 'Wait' is intransitive. You don't wait something — you wait, full stop. If a receiver comes in, it arrives through a preposition: 'wait for the bus'. The waiting itself doesn't grab the bus as an object. 'Listen' works the same way at this level. She listens — intransitive. The listening happens inside her ears. If the sound source comes in, it uses 'to': 'listens to music'. The preositional phrase 'to music' isn't an object. Even 'travel' stands alone. He travels — complete. The traveling happens. If you add a destination, it comes through 'to' or 'across' or 'through', not as a direct object. These verbs fool learners because they feel like they should reach out, but they close at the doer.

Some verbs swing both ways. She runs — intransitive. She runs the company — transitive. Watch what comes after the verb to tell which job it's doing right now. The verb's name doesn't lock it into one category. The sentence structure decides.

  1. Ask 'what?' or 'whom?' right after the verb. If no clean noun or pronoun answers, the verb is intransitive
  2. Don't confuse adverbs or prepositional phrases with objects
'She sleeps soundly' — 'soundly' describes the sleeping but doesn't receive it. (3) Watch for dual-use verbs. Test each sentence fresh instead of assuming a verb is always one type. (4) Notice the silence. Stand-alone verbs finish their sentence early. That empty space after the verb is the clue. (5) If you speak Mandarin, resist adding objects to verbs that don't need them in English. 'I eat' is complete — no need for 'food' unless you're specifying what.
You now handle verbs that finish their job alone. She sleeps. The rain falls. The dog barked. Each verb completes its meaning without needing an object. The action stays with the doer — nothing receives it. You can test any verb by asking 'what?' right after it. Clean silence means intransitive. Some verbs wear both jackets — intransitive in one sentence, transitive in another. You don't memorize the list. You test the sentence. The disguised verbs — the dual-use ones — don't trick you anymore. You see the structure, you ask the question, you know which job the verb is doing right now.

The tidy past tense

The tidy past tense uses the same ending every time — '-ed'. 'Talk' becomes 'talked'. 'Ask' becomes 'asked'. 'Cook' becomes 'cooked'. The action happened in the past, so you add '-ed' to show it's finished. Three spelling rules keep it tidy. First, if the verb ends in silent 'e', drop the 'e' and add 'd' — 'love' becomes 'loved', 'smile' becomes 'smiled', 'dance' becomes 'danced'. Second, if the verb ends in a consonant and then 'y', flip the 'y' to 'i' and add 'ed' — 'cry' becomes 'cried', 'try' becomes 'tried', 'carry' becomes 'carried'. Third, for short verbs with one vowel followed by one consonant, double the consonant and add 'ed' — 'stop' becomes 'stopped', 'plan' becomes 'planned', 'hop' becomes 'hopped'. The ending always looks like '-ed' on the page, but your mouth says it three different ways. After a 't' or 'k' sound, it sounds like 't' — 'walked' sounds like 'walkt'. After most other sounds, it sounds like 'd' — 'lived' sounds like 'livd'. After a 'd' or 't' at the end of the base verb, it sounds like a full syllable 'id' — 'wanted' has two beats, 'want-id'.

The '-ed' pattern works because English simplified its past tense over centuries. Old English had dozens of different past-tense endings — now we have one that covers most verbs. That one ending makes the system learnable. You don't memorize a thousand different forms; you learn one pattern and three small spelling adjustments. The silent-'e' rule protects the spelling from double vowels. 'Love' plus 'ed' would make 'loveed' — awkward and confusing. Drop the 'e', and you get 'loved' — clean. The consonant-'y' rule keeps the sound clear — 'cryied' would look strange and no one would know how to say it. Flip to 'i' and you get 'cried', which your mouth already knows. The consonant-doubling rule keeps the vowel short — 'stoped' would rhyme with 'moped', which isn't the sound we want. 'Stopped' keeps the short 'o' sound crisp. When you read, the '-ed' is your signal that the action already finished. When you write, you add '-ed' to show the reader this happened in the past. The three pronunciation flavours follow patterns your ear already knows — you don't think about which one to use; your mouth picks the easiest sound automatically.

Picture a toolbox with one main tool — a stamp that prints '-ed' on the end of any verb. Three smaller tools sit next to it — an eraser for silent 'e', a flipper for 'y' to 'i', and a doubler for short verbs. Same stamp every time; the small tools just prep the verb to receive it.

The '-ed' ending is not just for past tense. It also appears in 'perfect' verb phrases like 'has walked' and in passive voice like 'was asked'. The same '-ed' form does triple duty — simple past, perfect aspect, and passive voice. For now, focus on simple past; the other uses will come later.

The consonant-doubling rule confuses many learners because it feels arbitrary. Why 'stopped' but not 'jumped'? The rule is: if the verb has one syllable, one vowel, and ends in one consonant, double that consonant before adding '-ed'. 'Stop' has one syllable, one vowel (o), one final consonant (p) — so you double the 'p'. 'Jump' has one syllable, one vowel (u), but ends in two consonants ('mp') — so you don't double anything; just add '-ed' to get 'jumped'. The reason is sound. Doubling the consonant keeps the vowel short — 'stopped' rhymes with 'hopped'. Without doubling, 'stoped' would rhyme with 'hoped', which changes the whole word. Your ear knows the difference even if the rule feels fiddly. Once you hear the short-vowel pattern, the doubling makes sense — it protects the sound you already know.

'Picnic' becomes 'picnicked' with a 'k' — not 'picniced'. Why the extra 'k'? Because 'c' alone at the end would make a soft sound before '-ed', changing the pronunciation. The 'k' keeps the hard sound. 'Panic' becomes 'panicked' for the same reason. It's a micro-rule inside the doubling rule — when a verb ends in 'c', you add 'k' before '-ed' to preserve the sound. Most regular verbs don't end in 'c', so this only comes up a handful of times, but it shows how the spelling system bends to protect pronunciation. The '-ed' pattern is tidy, but it's also flexible enough to keep English sounding like English.

Three little spelling traps — silent-'e' verbs drop the 'e', consonant-'y' verbs flip 'y' to 'i', and some short verbs double the last letter. Same '-ed' at the end every time. Sound it out and the rule shows itself.

(1) Before you add '-ed', check the last letter of the verb. Silent 'e'? Drop it. Consonant plus 'y'? Flip to 'i'. One vowel, one final consonant in a short verb? Double the consonant. (2) Say the past-tense form out loud. Your ear will catch spelling mistakes that your eye misses. If 'loveed' sounds wrong, it is — drop the 'e'. (3) Build a mental list of the top twenty regular verbs you use every day — talked, walked, played, watched, cooked, helped, asked, worked, cleaned, opened. Once you've written the '-ed' form a few times, your hand remembers the pattern. (4) When you read, notice the '-ed' forms. See how published writing handles 'tried', 'stopped', 'smiled'. The pattern becomes automatic when you see it in action. (5) Remember that the spelling is always '-ed', even when your mouth says 't' or 'd'. The visual consistency is the gift — one ending for thousands of verbs.

The tidy past tense doesn't fool you anymore. You add '-ed' to show the action already finished, and you handle the three spelling rules — silent-'e' drop, 'y'-to-'i' flip, consonant double — without breaking stride. Many languages form questions by tone or by adding a particle. English historically lost its old verb-fronting system and rebuilt questions using DO. The result is a rule that feels arbitrary to learners but is completely consistent once learned.

In very formal or poetic English, you might still see old-style inversion without DO — 'Know you the answer?' Shakespeare wrote this way. Modern English reserves this for a few fixed phrases — 'How do you do?' became 'How d'you do?' which shortened further. But standard modern English always uses DO when the verb is alone.

Once DO carries the tense, the main verb drops back to the bare form. 'Does she likes?' is wrong. 'Does she like?' is right. Only one verb-piece carries the -s or -ed; the other waits in plain form. This agreement trap catches learners constantly.

  2. Check if the statement already has 'is', 'are', 'was', 'can', 'will', or another helper — if yes, flip that helper to the front and stop
  3. If the statement has only a lone main verb, INSERT the right DO-family member at the front — 'do' for I/you/we/they present, 'does' for he/she/it present, 'did' for all past
  4. Drop the main verb back to bare form — remove -s or -ed because DO now carries that information
  5. Read the question aloud — does it sound natural?

Pick the right verb form

The sentence always gives you the time-clue. You just have to find it. Look at 'She ____ (eat) breakfast every morning.' The word 'every morning' is the clue — a habit that repeats. Habits live in simple present. So you pick 'eats'. Now look at 'She ____ (eat) breakfast yesterday.' The word 'yesterday' is the clue — finished past. Finished past lives in simple past. So you pick 'ate'. The verb doesn't change its meaning — eating is always eating. But the 'form' changes to match the 'time'. Every day means simple present. Yesterday means simple past. Right now means present continuous — add 'is' or 'are' plus the '-ing' form. Tomorrow means future — add 'will' before the base verb. The clue is always there; you just have to train your eye to see it before you look at the blank.

Here's the cheat sheet. 'Every day', 'always', 'usually', 'sometimes', 'often' — these point to habits, so use simple present: I walk, she walks, they walk. 'Yesterday', 'last week', 'last year', 'two days ago' — these point to finished past, so use simple past: I walked, she walked, they walked. 'Now', 'right now', 'at the moment', 'currently' — these point to happening-now, so use present continuous: I am walking, she is walking, they are walking. 'Tomorrow', 'next week', 'next year', 'soon' — these point to future, so use simple future: I will walk, she will walk, they will walk. Write this list down. Stick it on your wall. Before you fill any blank, scan the sentence for the time-clue first. The clue tells you which box to pull from. The rest is just matching.

Picture four labeled boxes on a shelf — 'habit', 'finished', 'happening', 'future'. Every sentence with a bracketed verb hands you a time-clue. You read the clue, reach for the matching box, and pull out the right form.

The hardest part for non-native speakers is that English morphology carries time information in the verb itself. In Mandarin, you say 'I eat breakfast yesterday' and add a time-word — the verb doesn't change. In Arabic, tense works differently — past and present have entirely different root patterns. In Hindi, you use auxiliary verbs but the main verb often stays the same. English forces you to change the verb's ending or add helpers. 'I walk' becomes 'I walked' or 'I am walking' or 'I will walk'. The 'time' isn't just a word floating nearby; it's baked into the verb. The good news is that the time-clue in the sentence tells you exactly which baked form to use. You're not guessing; you're matching. See 'yesterday' — pull 'walked'. See 'every day' — pull 'walk' or 'walks'. The matching is mechanical once you know the clue-words.

Here's a sentence that fools even strong students: 'The train ____ (leave) at 6 a.m. every day.' You see 'every day' and think habit — simple present. So far, correct. But then you have to choose between 'leave' and 'leaves'. The subject is 'the train' — singular, third person. In simple present, third-person singular adds an 's'. So the answer is 'leaves', not 'leave'. The time-clue got you to the right tense, but you still have to match the subject. Another one: 'They ____ (play) cricket right now.' You see 'right now' and think present continuous — correct. But the answer is 'are playing', not 'is playing' or just 'playing'. You need the helper 'are' (because the subject is 'they', plural) plus the '-ing' form. The time-clue points to the tense; the subject points to the helper. Both matter.

The clue is in the sentence. 'Every morning' means habit — use simple present. 'Yesterday' means finished past — use simple past. 'Right now' means happening — use present continuous. 'Tomorrow' means future — use will. Read the time-words first; the verb form follows.

The disguised verbs don't trick you anymore. You can now spot the time-clue in any sentence and match it to the right verb form. 'Every day' pulls simple present. 'Yesterday' pulls simple past. 'Right now' pulls present continuous. 'Tomorrow' pulls future. The clue is the anchor. The form is the match. You don't guess; you read and choose. This is the workhorse question in every exam — CBSE, ICSE, IGCSE, IEO, SSC. You've learned the pattern. Now you just need reps. Fill a hundred blanks and the matching becomes automatic. Your eye will land on 'every morning' and your hand will write 'eats' before your brain even asks why.

Who is doing? Who is done to?

Active voice follows the natural doer-action-receiver order. The dog chased the cat. Who did it? The dog. What did the dog do? Chased. What got chased? The cat. The doer launches the sentence. Passive voice flips that order and uses a special helper combination. The cat was chased by the dog. Now the cat — the thing that got chased — leads the sentence. The verb becomes two words: 'was' (a BE-helper) plus 'chased' (the past participle). The doer appears after 'by' or vanishes. The cat was chased. No dog mentioned. Passive needs two pieces working together: a BE-helper (is, are, was, were, has been, will be, is being) and a past-participle verb (written, broken, sent, eaten, given). If both pieces are there, you're looking at passive voice. If the doer comes first and the verb is one word or uses a non-BE helper, you're looking at active voice.

Sometimes passive hides the doer on purpose. Mistakes were made. Who made them? The sentence doesn't say. That's passive doing its job — shifting focus away from responsibility. Other times passive keeps scientific writing neutral. The bacteria were observed under a microscope. The reader doesn't need to know who held the microscope; the bacteria matter. Active voice keeps the doer visible. Dr. Patel observed the bacteria. Now we know who did the observing. The choice between active and passive isn't about right or wrong. It's about where you want the reader's eyes to land first. Passive takes more words — two-part verb plus optional BY-phrase — but it lets the thing-done lead. Active is shorter and clearer about who did what. Recognising both lets you see what the writer chose and why.

Picture a stage. Active voice: the doer walks on first, does the action, and the receiver appears last. Passive voice: the receiver walks on first, the action happens to them from behind (BE-helper plus past-participle), and the doer either sneaks in at the end after 'by' or never appears at all.

Passive voice can stack multiple helpers. The letter has been written. The letter will be sent. The letter is being checked. Each version uses BE in some form (been, be, being) plus a past participle. The more helpers, the more complex the time, but the voice stays passive.

Some verbs look the same in adjective form and participle form, which makes spotting passive hard. The door is broken. Is that passive (someone broke it) or just description (it's in a broken state)? Context decides. If you can add 'by someone' and it makes sense, you've got passive. The door is broken by vandals — passive. The door is broken (no doer fits naturally) — probably just descriptive adjective. Another layer: some past participles work as adjectives so often we forget they came from verbs. She is known worldwide. 'Known' started as the participle of 'know', but now it feels like an adjective. Technically passive voice (someone knows her), but it reads like a state. The line blurs. For this section, if you see BE plus a word that could be a past participle, mark it passive. The finer shades come later.

Passive voice can appear with no doer at all, and that's often the point. The package was delivered. We care that it arrived, not who brought it. Promises were broken. Naming the breaker might start a fight; keeping it general keeps peace. Passive without a doer is a writer's tool for softening blame, keeping focus tight, or avoiding awkward phrasing. English was spoken here (versus Someone spoke English here — clunky if we don't know who). When you spot passive with no BY-phrase, ask yourself: why did the writer leave the doer out? Sometimes it's because the doer is obvious (The president was elected — by voters, we assume). Sometimes it's because the doer is unknown or irrelevant. Sometimes it's to dodge responsibility. The same structure, different reasons.

After a linking verb like 'is' or 'seems', an adjective often follows — she seems tired. That is NOT passive voice. Passive needs a past-participle verb: she was tired by the journey. She has been writing — active progressive. Passive always uses BE (or GET in informal speech) plus past participle.

Does it end in -ed, -en, -t, or irregular past-participle form (written, broken, sent, known)? If yes, you likely have passive. (3) Look for the doer. In active, the doer is the subject at the front. In passive, the doer comes after 'by' or disappears. (4) Test BY-insertion. If you can add 'by someone' or 'by something' after the verb and the sentence still makes sense, it's passive. The car was washed by someone — passive. The car is red by someone — nonsense, so 'is red' is linking, not passive. (5) Count the verb parts. Active usually has one main verb or a helper plus main verb (has written, will eat). Passive always has BE-form plus past participle — two pieces minimum.

When phrases hide between subject and verb

The phrase 'of apples' tells you which basket, but 'apples' does not command the verb. 'The students in the back row ARE shouting.' Subject equals 'students'. Plural noun. Plural verb 'are'. The phrase 'in the back row' locates the students, but 'row' does not control agreement. The test: cover the intervening phrase with your hand. Does the sentence still make sense? Parallel verb forms

Implicit parallelism across discontinuous elements is the deepest layer. Consider 'she not only revised the manuscript but also the bibliography' — the verb 'revised' governs both objects ('the manuscript' and 'the bibliography'), but the structure implies a second verb for the second object. The sentence feels parallel because the verb is ellipted: 'she not only revised the manuscript but also [revised] the bibliography'. Now consider a break: 'she not only revised the manuscript but also was compiling the bibliography' — the first clause uses simple past ('revised'), the second uses past progressive ('was compiling'). The forms don't match, and the sentence lurches. The rule: when a correlative conjunction ('not only... but also', 'either... or', 'neither... nor') links two clauses, the verb forms in those clauses must be parallel. Another difficult case: parallelism of voice across a passive list. 'The data was collected, the results were analysed, and we discussed the implications' — the first two are passive, the third is active. The break is structural, not just formal. Intervening modifier agreement traps

The SAT writing section loves sentences that look like this: 'The team of engineers, working alongside consultants from three international firms, HAVE completed the prototype ahead of schedule.' The verb should be 'has' because the subject is 'team', singular. But the sentence plants 'engineers' (plural), 'consultants' (plural), 'firms' (plural) between the subject and the verb. Your eye lands on 'firms' just before 'have', and 'firms have' sounds right — so you miss the error. The GMAT does the same with even longer modifiers. 'The report on student performance, which includes data from twelve districts and highlights trends identified by the research team, SUGGEST immediate policy changes.' The subject is 'report', singular. The verb should be 'suggests'. But 'districts' and 'trends' and 'team' are all plural-sounding, and by the time you reach 'suggest', you've lost track of 'report'. The drill is mechanical. Find the verb. Walk backward through the sentence. Every time you hit a comma, you're entering or exiting a modifier. Cross out everything between the commas. What's left is the bare subject. Does it agree with the verb? That's the only question.

Start with a real SAT item: 'The collection of rare manuscripts, including several donated by the late professor's family, IS displayed in the east wing.' Read it all the way through. Locate the verb: 'is displayed'. Now walk backward. The phrase 'in the east wing' is a prepositional phrase — cross it out. The phrase 'including several donated by the late professor's family' is a participial modifier flanked by commas — cross it out. The phrase 'of rare manuscripts' is a prepositional phrase modifying 'collection' — cross it out. What's left? 'The collection is displayed.' Singular subject, singular verb. Correct. Now try a GMAT-style trap: 'The discovery of new fossil sites in remote regions, which have yielded specimens dating back millions of years, PROVIDE insights into evolutionary history.' Verb: 'provide'. Walk backward. 'Into evolutionary history' — prepositional phrase, cross out. 'Dating back millions of years' — participial phrase, cross out. 'Which have yielded specimens' — relative clause, cross out. 'In remote regions' — prepositional phrase, cross out. 'Of new fossil sites' — prepositional phrase, cross out. Bare skeleton: 'The discovery provide insights.' Singular 'discovery', plural 'provide'. Error. Should be 'provides'. The longer the modifier, the more strict the drill. If you skip even one comma-flanked phrase, you lose the subject.

Picture a suspension bridge. The subject is the left tower, the verb is the right tower. The roadway between them — all those modifiers — can sag and sway and carry traffic, but the towers must match in height. Cross out the roadway, measure tower to tower.

The cross-out drill works because it converts a grammar question into a visual-motor task. You're not holding the whole sentence in working memory anymore — you're physically marking what to ignore.

The hardest case is when the modifier contains a verb that looks like it could be THE verb. 'The scientist, having reviewed the data collected by three independent labs, PUBLISH the findings in a peer-reviewed journal.' Your eye might land on 'collected' and think that's the main verb. It's not — 'collected' is a past participle inside a participial phrase. The main verb is 'publish', which should be 'publishes' to agree with singular 'scientist'. How do you tell main verb from participle? Main verbs carry tense and can stand alone with their subject. Participles need a helper or live inside a modifier. 'The scientist having reviewed' — incomplete. 'The scientist publishes' — complete. That's your signal. When you cross out 'having reviewed the data collected by three independent labs', you're left with 'The scientist publish the findings' — singular subject, plural verb form, error. Another trap: the intervening clause uses a different tense from the main verb, making it feel like a separate sentence. 'The proposal, which was submitted last year and has undergone multiple revisions, MEET all the new guidelines.' The relative clause 'which was submitted…' uses past tense; the main verb 'meet' is present. That tense shift makes it feel like two sentences, but it's one. Cross out the relative clause. 'The proposal meet all the guidelines.' Error — should be 'meets'.

Most chose 'were' as correct because 'disruptions' and 'factories' and 'continents' are all plural, and 'delays' is plural. But the subject is 'reason', singular. The verb should be 'was'. 'The reason was thoroughly explained.' Singular. The sentence is designed to make you think 'delays were explained' or 'disruptions were explained', but neither 'delays' nor 'disruptions' is the subject. 'Reason' is. The cross-out drill is strict. Read the stem. Find the verb. Walk backward through every comma-flanked modifier and mentally delete it. The bare subject that survives is the one to agree with. The longer the modifier, the more essential this discipline becomes.

Gerund vs infinitive — meaning shifts

'Try' illustrates the flip clearly. 'I tried opening the window' — I experimented with the method of opening; I tested whether opening would work. The gerund treats the action as the 'experiment itself'. 'I tried to open the window' — I made an effort toward the goal of opening; maybe I succeeded, maybe I failed. The infinitive treats the action as the 'target of effort'. 'Regret' flips meaning and register together. 'I regret saying that' — I wish I hadn't said it; the saying already happened, and now I feel bad. 'I regret to say that...' — formal bad-news formula; the saying is happening now, and I'm sorry to be the messenger. One is personal remorse over a past act; the other is polite framing of present delivery. 'Mean' shifts from result to intention. 'Leaving early means missing the keynote' — if you leave, the result is that you miss. Gerund as consequence. 'I meant to call you' — I intended the action but didn't do it. The difficulty is that these verbs 'look' identical in the base form, and the flip reverses meaning 'silently' — no intonation, no particle, no extra word warns you. 'I need to fix this' versus 'This needs fixing' — both grammatical, opposite agency. The first has 'I' as the fixer; the second has 'this' as the thing requiring fixing, with the fixer unstated. When the verb takes both forms, ask — is the second action 'happening' (gerund) or 'proposed/intended' (infinitive)? 'Stopped smoking' equals quit, action that was happening. 'Stopped to smoke' equals paused to start a new action, proposed. The doing versus the planning. Once you anchor that rule, the rest is application.

(1) For each flip-verb you encounter, write two sentences — one with gerund, one with infinitive — and mark the meaning difference explicitly. 'I regret leaving early' (past action, remorse). 'I regret to leave early' (present necessity, polite apology). This trains the flip-recognition muscle. (2) When reading native prose, flag every instance of 'stop / remember / forget / try / regret / mean / go on / need' plus complement. Check the form. Ask why the writer chose that arrow direction. Participial modifier placement

The rule is attachment. A participial phrase that opens a sentence must attach to the subject immediately following. 'Walking down the street, I saw the accident' — 'walking' attaches to I. The person who was walking is the person who saw the accident. The structure is clean. 'Walking down the street, the accident shocked me' — 'walking' tries to attach to 'the accident'. But accidents don't walk. The modifier dangles — it has no grammatical anchor. The sentence promises that whatever comes after the comma will be the thing doing the -ing or the -ed action. When it isn't, the sentence breaks. You fix a dangling modifier in two ways. First way: change the subject so it matches the participial action. 'Walking down the street, I was shocked by the accident.' Now 'walking' attaches to I. Second way: convert the participial phrase into a full subordinate clause with its own subject. 'While I was walking down the street, the accident shocked me.' Now 'walking' has an explicit subject — I — inside the clause. The dangling error vanishes.

The same attachment rule governs -ed participles. 'Tired from the journey, the children fell asleep' — 'tired' modifies 'the children'. The children were tired. The modifier attaches cleanly. 'Tired from the journey, sleep came easily to the children' — dangling. Sleep wasn't tired. The participial phrase promises that the subject following the comma will be the thing experiencing tiredness. 'Sleep' can't experience tiredness. The modifier has no anchor. Standardized tests exploit this error because it appears in sophisticated-sounding prose. 'Having reviewed the data, the conclusion was clear' — dangling. The conclusion didn't review the data. Fix: 'Having reviewed the data, we found the conclusion clear' or 'After we reviewed the data, the conclusion was clear.' The SAT writing section presents four answer choices; three will contain dangling modifiers disguised by elegant vocabulary. You spot the error by asking: who or what is doing the participial action? If the answer doesn't match the grammatical subject, the sentence is wrong.

Picture the participial phrase as a rope thrown from the opening of the sentence. The rope must lasso the subject that follows. If the subject is the wrong noun — if it didn't do the participial action — the rope misses. The sentence topples.

Not every -ing phrase at the start of a sentence is participial. 'Smoking is forbidden' — 'smoking' is a gerund, the subject of 'is forbidden', not a modifier. The comma test separates them. Participial modifier: comma after the phrase. Gerund subject: no comma.

The hardest participial-modifier errors occur when the logical subject of the participial action is implied but not grammatically present. 'To understand the theorem, practice is essential' — 'to understand' is an infinitive phrase, not a participial, but the same attachment rule applies. Who needs to understand? Not 'practice'. The reader does. Fix: 'To understand the theorem, you need practice' or 'Understanding the theorem requires practice.' Participial absolutes complicate the picture further. 'The exam finished, the students left' — 'finished' is a participial, but it's part of an absolute construction where 'the exam' is the subject of 'finished' within the phrase itself. The whole phrase modifies the main clause. Absolutes don't dangle because they carry their own subject. But they're rare in student writing. The SAT tests the basic dangling case — an -ing or -ed phrase followed by a mismatched subject — ninety-five percent of the time.

'Born in 1952, Nairobi was the city where Wangari Maathai grew up' — this sentence appeared in a published travel guide. It's dangling. Nairobi wasn't born in 1952. Wangari Maathai was. The city is the grammatical subject, but the participial phrase describes the person. Fix: 'Born in 1952, Wangari Maathai grew up in Nairobi' or 'Nairobi was the city where Wangari Maathai, born in 1952, grew up.' Even professional editors miss dangling modifiers when the sentence sounds fluent. Your advantage as a test-taker: you know the attachment rule. You check every participial opener.

A participle — a verb-form ending in -ing or -ed — often does an adjective's describing job: the 'broken' window, the 'running' water. Chapter 3 shows the wider adjective family. Here, the placement rule is the spine. When the participle opens the sentence as a phrase, attachment is mandatory.

(1) Every time you see a comma after an -ing or -ed phrase at the start of a sentence, stop and ask: who or what is doing that action? The answer must be the grammatical subject that follows.
