Addition: Putting Together!
Chapter 4: Adding Without Carrying
When we add, we join groups together. The secret? Always add tens with tens and ones with ones! No rushing — we understand first, then write.
Setting Up for the Show!
Riya is helping set up for the school show! 🎭
"We have 23 chairs from Room A and 14 chairs from Room B."
Milo wags his tail. "How many chairs altogether?"
Riya thinks. "I'll join the tens together, then join the ones together!"
Before we add, let's see how numbers break into tens and ones.
💡 Remember: This is just like Chapter 2! Every two-digit number has a tens place and a ones place.
23 + 14
💡 Rule: We only combine ones with ones — never mix them with tens!
23 + 14
💡 Bundles stay as bundles! We count how many bundles altogether, not the individual sticks inside.
⚠️ Important: In this chapter, the ones always add up to 9 or less. Nothing moves to the next place — no carrying yet!
We can write addition in a column. Tens under tens, ones under ones!
💡 Check your alignment! The ones column adds: 3 + 4 = 7. The tens column adds: 2 + 1 = 3.
You can write addition horizontally (across) or vertically (in columns). Both mean the same thing!
+ 14
────
37
💡 Both are correct! They represent the same thinking. Use whichever helps you see the place values clearly.
One number is hidden! Can you figure out what it is?
💡 Think backwards: "What do I need to add to 25 to get 38?"
Start with a number and keep adding! Watch your total grow.
Tap a number to add it:
💡 Challenge: Can you reach exactly 50? Or exactly 100? Plan your additions!
💡 Try at home: Count items in two groups and add them together. Use real objects like toys, coins, or snacks!
💜 Why no carrying yet? Carrying (regrouping) is introduced in Chapter 5. This chapter builds the foundation of place value alignment. Rushing this step causes long-term confusion. Let children master the "ones with ones, tens with tens" rule first!
