Choosing What to Do!

Chapter 8: Addition & Subtraction Stories

The hardest part of a story problem is not the math. It's deciding: Should I add or subtract? Let's learn to understand the story before we calculate!

The Tricky Words!

Riya is reading a story problem. 🌟

"It says 'Ravi has 5 more marbles than Priya.'"

Milo barks excitedly. "'More' means add, right?"

Riya shakes her head. "Not always, Milo! We need to understand the STORY first!"

📖
What Is the Story Asking?
Understand before calculating

Before we do ANY math, let's ask: What is happening in the story?

1
Don't look at numbers first. Understand what's happening.
2
🎬 Picture the scene
Imagine the story in your mind. See the objects moving.
3
❓ Find the question
What does the story want to know?
4
🤔 Decide: Add or Subtract?
Is the answer getting bigger or smaller?
💡
"Understand the story FIRST. The numbers come LAST."
Addition Stories
Putting things together

When we put together or join things, we ADD!

🔒 First, decide: What operation will you use?

💡 Addition clues: "in all", "altogether", "joined", "got more", "both together" — BUT always check the story meaning!

Subtraction Stories
Taking away or leaving

When things go away, are eaten, or leave, we SUBTRACT!

🔒 First, decide: What operation will you use?

💡 Subtraction clues: "left", "remaining", "went away", "ate", "gave away", "flew off" — BUT always check the story meaning!

⚖️
Compare Stories
The hidden subtraction — "how many more?"

When we compare two groups, we find the difference. This is subtraction!

⚠️ Tricky Words Alert!

"How many MORE does Ravi have?"

This says "more" but it's really asking: What's the DIFFERENCE?

Difference = SUBTRACTION!

🔒 First, decide: What operation will you use?
🎯
"How many more?" and "How many fewer?" ALWAYS mean subtract to find the difference!

Explain Your Choice
Why did you add or subtract?

A good mathematician can explain their thinking. Let's practice!

🗣️ Why is this subtraction (or addition)?

💡 Good explanations use the story: "I subtract because the birds flew AWAY, so there are fewer birds now."

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Watch For
Keyword dependency: Child thinks "more" always means add. ("Ravi has 5 more than Priya" requires subtraction to find Priya's amount!)
Rushing to numbers: Child jumps to calculation without understanding the story context.
Ignoring comparison problems: "How many more?" is subtraction, not addition!
Random operation: Child guesses add/subtract without reasoning.
⚠️ The Keyword Trap — Help Your Child Avoid It!
🚫 Don't teach: "'More' means add, 'left' means subtract"
Do teach: "What is HAPPENING in the story? Are things coming together or going apart?"
💡 Example trap: "Amit has 8 more stickers than Reena. Reena has 15 stickers. How many does Amit have?" — The word "more" appears, but this is ADDITION only if you understand the story!
🏠 Home Activities
🛒 Shopping stories: "We have 20 apples. We use 8 for the pie. How many left?" Ask child to explain their choice.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family comparisons: "Papa is 35, I am 7. How many years MORE is Papa?" Discuss why this is subtraction.
🎮 Game scores: "You got 45 points, I got 32. Who won? By how many?" Compare = subtract!
📖 Make up stories: Give an equation like "12 + 7 = ?" and ask child to create a story that matches it.
Correct!
