You usually start by reviewing the daily work or delivery schedules and any lift plans for the day. That tells you which loads, where they go, and which crane is used.
Next you inspect the crane (cables, lubricate mechanisms, check stability), weigh and record bundle weights if needed, plan lifts based on site conditions, then operate the crane while communicating with ground personnel by hand signals or radio. You finish by recording operational data and maintenance activities.
You work with the crane operation control systems built into the machine (load indicators, limits, cameras) and simple software for inventory tracking and recording weights and locations. Many shops use Microsoft Office (Excel) to log weights, maintenance, and shift reports.
Hands-on tools include floor scales for weighing bundles, inspection tools for cables and lubrication, and radios or agreed hand signals for ground communication.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS, 2025), 42,890 people are employed as crane operators. The median pay is $68,080 per year. The lowest tenth earn about $42,640 and the top tenth about $103,570 per year.
Those BLS numbers are national medians; local pay can shift with union rates, overtime, and specialized cranes (tower vs. mobile).
Start with a trade school, union apprenticeship, or an employer training program that covers rigging, load calculation, and crane operation control systems. You’ll learn inspecting cables, maintenance, and signal use.
Get certified where required (NCCCO in the U.S. is common), practice in entry roles like rigger or signal person, and learn basic inventory tracking and recordkeeping in Excel to be useful from day one.
A crane operator handles loads suspended on a hook using cranes (tower, mobile, overhead), plans lifts for stability, and determines load center of gravity. They record weights and maintenance and inspect cables and crane mechanisms.
A forklift operator moves palletized loads on forks at ground level and usually doesn’t deal with suspended-load rigging, tower stability, or the same scale of lift planning and crane control systems.
Automation can assist (load indicators, anti-collision sensors, remote cameras), but currently operators make many judgment calls: planning lifts based on site conditions, determining the load’s centre of gravity, and communicating with ground personnel.
AI tools should be used as supplements—data logging, predictive maintenance alerts, or camera views—not as full replacements until regulations, safety validation, and proven field reliability exist.
