Many technicians start as apprentices with a union or an elevator company apprenticeship that combines paid on-the-job training with classroom instruction. Look for programs through local unions, vocational schools, or manufacturer training.
The apprenticeship covers electrical wiring plans, blueprint reading, welding, installing support assemblies, and safety. You should plan for ongoing training because you’ll need to participate in additional training to keep skills up to date.
People forget how much time goes into paperwork and communication: keeping service records, updating the CMMS, and reporting the state of the lift to clients after each visit. Those tasks can take 15–45 minutes per job.
Another underestimated part is precise mechanical work—bolting or welding steel rails in shafts, setting lifts into a framed hoistway, and attaching guide shoes and rollers require patience and exact measurements.
