Can AI actually do this job?

the honest answer

It can

where it genuinely helps
  • Explain the theory behind the work
  • Draft, tidy and structure your writing
  • Rehearse a hard conversation before you have it
  • Build a study plan that fits your gaps

It cannot

where it stops, completely
  • Be in the room where an ev charging technician actually works
  • Carry the responsibility when the call is wrong — that weight stays yours
  • Notice what no one wrote down: the hesitation, the thing left unsaid
  • Live with the outcome

Questions people actually ask

You usually start by visiting several sites to inspect existing chargers and electrical panels, often with plans or AutoCAD/Revit drawings. Tasks include testing chargers, replacing defective components, wiring connections, and running diagnostic tools.

Afternoon work is often assembling or installing new charging units, documenting changes in Excel or Word, and updating maintenance standards. You may also meet an engineer about design tweaks or order parts after checking prices and delivery times.

Learn Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office first: technicians use Excel for parts lists, cost estimates, and maintenance schedules. You’ll also write reports and emails in Word and Outlook.

Next, learn Autodesk AutoCAD or Revit for reading site plans and SolidWorks when you need to review or build prototype parts. Linux is useful if the charger’s firmware or test tools use open-source systems.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), there were about 95,130 employed in similar roles; the median wage is $78,190 per year. The lowest tenth earn about $49,510 and the top tenth about $115,700 per year.

Use BLS figures as a general shape: pay varies by region, certifications, and whether you do design work, testing, or project management.

Start with an electrician apprenticeship or technical certificate in electrical technology so you learn wiring, safety codes, and practical troubleshooting. Take courses that teach electrical theory, use of meters, and safety standards.

Add modules or short courses on AutoCAD/Revit for reading plans, Excel for estimates, and basic SolidWorks if you’ll build prototypes. Keep doing continuing education to follow industry advances.

Compared with a general electrician, EV charging technicians specialize on chargers, networking, diagnostics, and often read AutoCAD/Revit site plans. You do more testing, component replacement, and use of system software than a typical residential electrician.

Compared with an electrical engineer, technicians do less original circuit design and math-heavy analysis. Engineers write specifications and prototypes; technicians implement, test, troubleshoot, and help with prototypes, often using SolidWorks for parts and Excel for cost estimates.

You need applied electrical and electronic theory (to trace circuits and diagnose faults), hands-on skills to replace parts, and the ability to set up and operate test equipment. Use math to calculate loads, cable sizes, and cost estimates in Excel.

You’ll also inspect designs for quality control, read AutoCAD/Revit drawings, and sometimes build or test prototypes in SolidWorks or on shop benches. Good troubleshooting combines measurement, schematics, and step-by-step isolation.
