You start by checking the production control board or SAP for today's build orders and parts lists. Then you gather parts, read the schematic or standard blueprint for the unit, and set up tools and protective gear like gloves and safety glasses.

Most of the day is hands-on: installing components and subassemblies, positioning and aligning workpieces, drilling or tapping holes, using rivets/bolts/soldering, and inspecting assemblies for quality. You end by packing finished assemblies, tagging inventory, and updating SAP or Sage 100 ERP.

Expect to use SAP or Sage 100 ERP to pull work orders and update inventory so managers know what shipped. Microsoft Word and Outlook are used for simple reports, shift notes, and emails.

If you're testing or calibrating electrical parts, you may use National Instruments LabVIEW for automated tests and a calibration system or tools to adjust instruments. Basic Excel skills help but are not always required.

Start with the basics: identify symbols for resistors, connectors, holes, and mechanical parts on a standard blueprint. Practice by following a simple assembly from start to finish and matching each step to the drawing.

Ask a trainer to walk you through one product on your first shift. Most shops pair new hires with an experienced assembler who explains notation, tolerances, and where to align or drill. Keep a pocket reference of common symbols.

You can use AI for non-sensitive help: clarifying a schematic symbol, converting units, or drafting a short checklist. Never upload proprietary drawings, ERP data, or product schematics unless your company permits it.

For safety-critical procedures (calibration settings, soldering specs, banned-material rules), always follow the factory's written procedures or ask a supervisor. AI can suggest questions to ask but should not replace formal training or calibration systems.

A factory assembler focuses on putting parts and subassemblies together to match a specified build—installing components, soldering, aligning parts, and packing finished products. You follow production orders and inspect quality.

An electronics technician designs, troubleshoots, or repairs circuits and may use LabVIEW for detailed testing. A machinist cuts and shapes raw metal on lathes or mills. Assemblers may do light drilling/tapping and use hand/power tools but usually don’t program CNC machines.

You must wear the plant-required protective gear: safety glasses, gloves, steel-toe shoes, and sometimes hearing protection or anti-static wrist straps for electronics. Follow rules on banned materials—no unauthorized leaded solder or restricted chemicals.

Use proper ventilation or fume extraction when soldering. Lockout/tagout is required before adjusting powered machinery. If you calibrate instruments, follow the calibration procedure and use the calibration system or tools provided.

Show that you can read standard blueprints and follow assembly procedures accurately. Employers look for steady hand skills—soldering, riveting, drilling—and the ability to inspect parts to the required tolerance or spec.

Also demonstrate basic computer skills for SAP or Sage 100 ERP, the ability to mark/tag inventory, good communication to explain procedures to coworkers or customers, and willingness to wear and follow safety rules. Practical examples from school projects or internships help.
