Can AI actually do this job?

the honest answer

It can

where it genuinely helps
  • Play the other person, over and over
  • Grade its own suggestion against your goal

It cannot

where it stops, completely
  • Live with the outcome the way a finance manager has to

read this carefullyThese two numbers are not comparable and must not be converted into each other. One is a yearly figure for this job alone; the other is a monthly figure for a whole family of jobs. What travels between them is the pattern, not the amount: experience lifts pay almost everywhere.

Questions people actually ask

You’ll split time between numbers and people. Morning might mean opening Microsoft Outlook, checking emails from auditors, and reviewing yesterday’s cash flow in Microsoft Excel.

Afternoons often include meetings: a budget review using Excel or PowerPoint, one-on-one with finance staff you supervise, and calls with banks or customers. Weekly tasks include preparing reports for executives and updating SharePoint with documents for auditors.

Expect Excel every day for budgets, forecasts, and pivot tables. Use PowerPoint to present results and Outlook for scheduling and client emails.

You’ll also touch QuickBooks for bookkeeping in smaller firms, Access for custom databases, Acrobat for PDFs auditors need, and SharePoint to store reports. SPSS is only used if your employer asks for statistical analysis.

Learn Excel deeply: formulas, pivot tables, and basic macros (VBA). Practice building a budget model and a cash-flow forecast you can explain in five minutes.

Study accounting basics and tax filing requirements relevant to your country. Get familiar with QuickBooks and SharePoint workflows, and practice writing clear PowerPoint slides and Outlook communication.

A finance manager runs the team and makes decisions: setting budgets, guiding investments, ensuring compliance, and supervising staff. You look at long-term financial plans and company-wide controls.

Financial analysts focus on building models and market trend analysis. Accountants handle recording transactions and preparing tax filings. As manager you review both analysts’ models and accountants’ reports before presenting to leaders.

Yes, but carefully. Use AI to draft summaries, create slide text, or suggest formulas, then verify every number in Excel and QuickBooks. Never let AI produce audited figures without human review.

Keep records of edits and maintain control over asset and collateral procedures. For compliance or tax filings, rely on validated systems (Excel, QuickBooks, Acrobat-stamped PDFs) and an actual finance person to sign off.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) for 2025, 841,710 people were employed as finance managers. Median pay was $166,570 per year; the lowest 10% earned about $94,310, and the top 10% made about $323,270.

Pay varies by industry, company size, and location. Use BLS data as a starting point and check job postings in your city for current market offers.

Clear financial communication: being able to explain budgets, forecasts, and risks simply to non-finance leaders. That includes clean Excel models, short PowerPoint slides, and concise Outlook summaries.

You also need to lead people—supervising staff, organizing training, recruiting, and ensuring procedures for asset custody and audits are followed. Communication ties the technical work to leadership decisions.

How far can AI take you?

one question
Be honest — how far can a language model take you on investing?
There is a real answer, and it is not the flattering one.
