The rest of the day you use hand tools, power tools and jacks to align and fit parts, check workpieces to specifications, heat-treat or weld as needed, and record measurements in Excel or a site log.

Expect to see CADD/CAD files, Tekla models and sometimes Dassault Systemes CATIA 3D models for complex parts. Three-dimensional modeling helps you understand how parts fit before cutting.

You also use Microsoft Excel and Word for parts lists, measurement records and simple layouts. Printouts of blueprints remain common on the shop floor.

Practice measuring, marking and laying out metal stock, and learn to recognise common metals and corrosion. Entry-level jobs often start as a fitter's assistant or fabricator.

A fitter assembles and aligns parts, checks fit to blueprints, and prepares pieces for installation. Fitters use jacks, wedges and hand/power tools to align and fit parts.

Welders join metals permanently. Machinists cut and finish parts to exact dimensions on machine tools. In smaller shops one person may do several roles, but the focus differs.

AI tools can help with reading CAD files, converting 2D drawings to 3D or checking measurements in Excel, but never trust an AI to replace physical verification. Always check dimensions and alignment yourself on the workpiece.

Automation like CNC or digital measuring tools speeds repeat work, but you still set up, inspect for corrosion or fit, and confirm torch temperatures and heat-treating steps manually.

Precise measuring and layout are vital: you must read blueprints, mark designs on metal, and check workpieces to specifications. Being able to align parts with jacks and wedges and use common metalworking tools fast is key.

Also learn metal types, signs of corrosion, basic heat-treat and torch temperatures for processes. Those practical skills cut rework and make you reliable on a site or in a shop.
