You might split time between the office and field. Mornings often review AutoCAD Civil 3D or Revit drawings, check schedules in Excel, and answer client emails. Afternoons can be site visits to supervise investigations, test soils, or oversee structure implementation and safety standards.

On busy days you’ll monitor project progress, update technical reports and bids, and meet contractors. When contamination or accidents occur you switch to designing cleanup or repair plans and coordinate with environmental teams to protect public health.

Start with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office because you’ll use them every day for bids, schedules, and reports. Learn basic spreadsheets, pivot tables, and how to format technical documents in Word and PDFs with Adobe Acrobat.

Next pick either Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D or Bentley MicroStation depending on your employer. Civil 3D is common for grading, water flow and hydraulic design; MicroStation is used by some utilities and agencies. Familiarity with ESRI ArcGIS for mapping is also very useful.

You supervise or coordinate tests to determine foundation or pavement strength — for example, lab compressive tests on concrete samples or in-situ soil density and bearing tests. Results feed directly into load, grade and material stress calculations for design specifications.

Those numbers change the civil drawings in Civil 3D or the repair plans. If tests show contamination, you also work on disposal systems and cleanup engineering to protect public and environmental health.

AI can speed routine writing — draft technical reports, summarize survey data, or generate checklists for safety and inspections. Always verify any calculation, code citation, or drawing note; AI may produce plausible but incorrect numbers or standards.

Don’t let AI replace field judgement. For design and load computations use validated engineering software (Civil 3D, Revit) and your own calculations in Excel. Keep client and safety data private; follow your employer’s data-security rules.
