Most shifts start at the gate or cargo yard briefing the ground crew and pilots about loads and timing. You check the loadplan, confirm equipment (pallet jacks, loaders), and supervise teams as they load, secure, and balance each pallet or container.
Between flights you calculate weight and center of gravity (CG), adjust cargo orientation, sign off load sheets, and handle last-minute changes or damaged freight. Shifts vary: mornings can be heavy with outbound freight; nights often handle incoming transfers or delayed flights.
You use load-planning software (examples: Loadmaster, AMP or airline-specific tools) to enter weights, positions, and compute the aircraft CG. On the ramp you rely on forklifts, high loaders, pallet nets, tie-down straps, and ULDs (unit load devices — the metal pallets and containers).
You also use radios for crew coordination, paper or electronic load sheets for signatures, and safety gear (high-vis, gloves, hearing protection). Knowing how the specific airline’s load plan reports CG and limits is critical.
AI tools can speed up data entry, flag CG exceedances, or suggest cargo placements, but you must not rely on them blindly. Always verify AI output against the aircraft’s official weight and balance tables and your own measurements.
Treat AI like a helper: use it to propose a plan, then manually check weights, orientations, and the final CG calculation before sign-off. Keep record of the source data (scales, manifests) used to train or feed the AI.
You add each cargo item’s weight and arm (distance from the datum), calculate moments (weight × arm), sum moments, then divide by total weight to get the CG arm. Airlines give the datum and CG limits in the aircraft’s loading manual.
Important numbers: individual item weight (to the kilogram or pound), item arm, total weight, and the allowable forward and aft CG limits (usually in inches or millimeters from the aircraft datum). If CG is outside limits, you must reposition or offload cargo.
Compared with a ramp agent, a loading supervisor manages and signs off the whole loading process, computes CG, and coordinates teams — ramp agents do the hands-on moving and marshalling. You’re the person ensuring legal weight and balance, not just moving bags.
Compared with a flight attendant, you don’t normally handle in-cabin passenger service. However, you may brief passengers about safety during special cargo flights or act as part of the flight crew for cargo-only flights, focusing on cargo monitoring and emergency procedures.
Start as a ramp agent or loader to learn equipment and cargo handling. Get certified in load control or loadmaster courses offered by airlines or aviation schools; some countries require a load planner certificate. Forklift and high-loader operator certificates are often mandatory.
You must understand aircraft weight and balance tables — study the airline’s Load Control Manual and practice manual CG calculations. Training in safety, dangerous goods handling, and radio communication helps you move up faster.
Attention to detail is the key skill: accurate weights, correct cargo orientation, and exact CG calculations save safety and money. Small mistakes in entry or measurement can shift the CG out of limits.
Prove it by showing accurate load sheets, error-free CG calculations, and examples where you caught and corrected mis-declared weights or secured a load that would have shifted. Employers look for documented training and on-the-job examples during interviews.
