You usually start by reading the job tickets and blueprints for the day — AutoCAD or SolidWorks drawings, or a paper print. Then set up machines: pick tooling, program or load CNC G-code (HSMWorks or Fusion 360), and mount the workpiece.

Most of the day is running parts, measuring with calipers and micrometers, logging production and quality in Excel or SAP, and fixing anything that goes out of tolerance. You’ll also help polish finished parts, sort scrap for recycling, and talk to engineers when problems arise.

Expect to use CAD/CAM and office software. Common CAD/CAM: SolidWorks, Fusion 360, HSMWorks, and AutoCAD for drawings. You’ll generate or edit G-code from those systems to run CNC machines.

For shop records and communication use Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and sometimes SAP for inventory and production logs. Hand tools and measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, dial indicators) are used constantly on the floor.

Secondary but critical skills are CNC programming (G-code) and CAM work in Fusion 360 or HSMWorks, plus basic troubleshooting of machines. Combine solid measurement habits with CAM skills to make reliable, accurate parts.
