Compared with an operations technician, the supervisor spends less time fixing equipment and more time scheduling, prioritizing work, and signing off procedures. Technicians focus on hands-on repairs and machine checks.
Compared with a plant manager, the supervisor is more involved in daily shift control, employee scheduling, and immediate coordination of maintenance. Managers focus more on budgets, contracts, and long-term strategy.
You can use AI for routine tasks like parsing logs, summarizing DCS trends into an Excel chart, or auto-filling CMMS entries. Use it to speed report writing in Word or Outlook drafts, but always verify its outputs against original DCS data and maintenance records.
Do not let AI change control setpoints, bypass safety interlocks, or make maintenance decisions without human review. Keep operator and safety procedures as the final authority and log any AI-assisted actions in the CMMS.
The most important skill is prioritization under pressure: deciding which alarm or equipment fault gets attention, who to call, and what can wait while keeping the plant safe and meeting power targets. That means using DCS data, CMMS history, and staff skills fast.
