Keep manual flying practice during regular simulator sessions and real flights to maintain stick-and-rudder skills. Don’t let automation replace basic tasks like pre-flight inspections, instrument scan, or emergency procedures; practice those from memory and with instructors.
To carry passengers commercially you need a commercial pilot certificate and typically an instrument rating; for airline transport you need an ATP certificate and at least 1,500 flight hours (or reduced-hour pathways under certain programs). You also must pass medical exams and keep a valid medical certificate.
Becoming a captain usually requires several years of line experience, type rating on the aircraft, and passing airline/company checkrides. Decision-making is the most critical. You need to plan routes, respond to in-flight emergencies, request changes in altitude or route, and choose the safest speeds and altitudes under changing weather and system conditions. Good decisions save lives when instruments, weather, or ATC conflict.
However, spatial awareness (good sight and spatial reasoning) and manual flying skills remain essential—especially when flying visually, during takeoff/landing, or if you must fly without automation. Maintain all three through training, recency flights, and simulator work.
