Afternoons often mean trimming, glazing, moving pieces from the wheel to drying racks, and loading kilns. You’ll also measure finished pieces for size, examine for defects, and update supplies or orders in Excel or an inventory control system. Evenings can include teaching a pottery class or prepping for the next day.

Start with hands-on pottery classes at a community college or studio to learn wheel-throwing, trimming, glazing, and kiln firing. Courses will cover types of pottery materials (earthenware, stoneware, porcelain) and ceramics glazes.

Learn to operate equipment: wheels, pug mills (for blending and extruding clay), and kilns. Also practice measuring dimensions, quality inspection, and basic inventory control—often tracked in Microsoft Excel—so you can manage supplies and finished stock.

A ceramic engineer works with industrial processes, larger-scale production, precise temperature and pressure control, and materials engineering. They use more automated equipment and focus on technical properties rather than individual artistic pieces.
