Can AI actually do this job?

the honest answer

It can

where it genuinely helps
  • Explain the theory behind the work
  • Draft, tidy and structure your writing
  • Rehearse a hard conversation before you have it
  • Build a study plan that fits your gaps

It cannot

where it stops, completely
  • Be in the room where a sports analyst actually works
  • Carry the responsibility when the call is wrong — that weight stays yours
  • Notice what no one wrote down: the hesitation, the thing left unsaid
  • Live with the outcome

Questions people actually ask

You’ll split time between the field/gym and a desk. Mornings often mean practice planning, running drills, or attending team workouts and matches. Afternoons are for video review, updating performance records, and meeting coaches or parents.

Desk work uses Microsoft Excel to track stats, Microsoft Word or Google Docs for reports, and PowerPoint to present strategy. You also coordinate travel and equipment, and sometimes teach or advise students during the week.

Start with Microsoft Excel for stats, roster sheets, and budgets—teams use it daily. Learn basic formulas, sorting, and pivot tables for performance tracking.

Also get comfortable with Microsoft Word or Google Docs for reports and Microsoft PowerPoint for game plans. Microsoft Outlook is useful for scheduling, emails to parents, and travel coordination.

Use AI for data processing: automate stat aggregation, opponent tendencies, or simple video tagging. Treat its output as a recommendation, not a rule—coaches must check context and athlete wellbeing.

Keep player safety central: don’t let models push overly intense practice plans. Use Excel/PowerPoint to show AI findings to coaches and parents, and always document decisions in Word or Docs.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports 248,950 employed in related roles. The median wage is $47,320 per year; the lowest tenth is $28,790; the top tenth is $98,860. These are national figures and vary by level (high school, college, pro) and location.

Higher pay is common at colleges and pro teams, or when the role includes recruiting, travel coordination, or managing large budgets.

Clear communication: you must explain tactics, safety rules, and data to athletes, parents, and staff. That includes written reports in Word/Docs, slides in PowerPoint, and emails in Outlook.

If you can’t turn numbers from Excel into a simple plan or a clear message before a game or practice, your analysis won’t help the team.
