Questions people actually ask

You start at the yard with a briefing from dispatch about delays, PTC (Positive Train Control) advisories, and which cars are defective. Then you inspect each car, check paperwork in RailComm DocYard or Bourque YardMaster, and confirm the train is ready to leave on schedule.

During the run you make announcements, sell or check tickets on passenger runs, operate switches and doors as needed, monitor AEI (Automated Equipment Identification) and freight reservation notes, and complete en-route paperwork in Microsoft Word or Outlook before handing over at the next terminal.

Expect Bourque Data Systems YardMaster for yard movements and RailComm DocYard for paperwork and manifests. Positive Train Control (PTC) displays and Automated Equipment Identification (AEI) readers are used for safety and car ID.

You will also use freight reservation systems, basic Microsoft Office tools (Word and Outlook) to create and send reports, and inventory tracking tools for equipment and car status.

PTC actively enforces speed limits and prevents collisions, so you still drive and control switches but PTC will intervene if you exceed a limit or pass a stop signal. You must monitor the PTC display and follow dispatcher messages.

You are responsible for entering required train data into PTC and confirming alerts, and for coordinating with dispatch and the switch-engine crew when PTC flags an exception.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) for 2025, 46,440 people were employed as rail conductors. The median wage was $78,000 per year, the bottom tenth earned about $58,740, and the top tenth about $109,770.

Actual pay depends on carrier, seniority, routes (freight vs. passenger), overtime, and your local union contract — BLS gives the national picture.
