Can AI actually do this job?

the honest answer

It can

where it genuinely helps
  • Explain the theory behind the work
  • Draft, tidy and structure your writing
  • Rehearse a hard conversation before you have it
  • Build a study plan that fits your gaps

It cannot

where it stops, completely
  • Be in the room where a transport planner actually works
  • Carry the responsibility when the call is wrong — that weight stays yours
  • Notice what no one wrote down: the hesitation, the thing left unsaid
  • Live with the outcome

Questions people actually ask

You start by checking the Transportation Management System (TMS) and email (Outlook) for new bookings and updates. You plan shipments, assign modes (truck, rail, air), and prepare manifests and customs docs for that day.

Midday you track deliveries in TMS, update Excel or SAP with weights and costs, call carriers about delays or damage, and help direct trucks to loading doors. End of day you file reports, restock packing materials, and log unresolved issues to follow up tomorrow.

Learn TMS first because you’ll use it every shift to book, track, and update shipments and manifests. TMS is the system that shows real-time delivery progress and holds shipment records.

Next, get good at Excel for cost/weight tracking, basic pivot tables, and reporting. SAP is useful if your employer uses it for posting or invoicing, but it’s secondary to TMS and Excel when starting.

Use AI to draft routine emails, summarize carrier updates from TMS, or generate checklist templates for inspections. Always check AI outputs against your systems: verify weights, booking IDs, and manifests in TMS or SAP before sending.

Never feed customer data or customs docs with personal or sensitive numbers into public AI tools. Treat AI as a drafting aid, not the final source of truth.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), 97,670 people worked as transport planners (SOC 43-5011.00). The median annual wage is $52,260; the lowest tenth is $38,340 and the top tenth is $79,810.

Begin with free online courses on supply chain basics and a short TMS demo if you can get one. Practice Excel skills—filters, SUMIFS, and pivot tables—because you’ll log costs and weights every day.

Try to get an entry role like shipping clerk or dispatcher to learn manifests, freight inspection, and customs paperwork. Volunteer to help with marshaling, loading, or manifest prep to see daily operations.

No. A transport planner focuses on scheduling shipments, choosing modes, preparing manifests, tracking delivery, and handling documentation (TMS, Excel, SAP). They often work inside a company moving the company’s goods.

A freight broker finds carriers for third-party shippers and handles contracts and payments. A dispatcher directs drivers day-to-day. There’s overlap—planners may do some dispatching or brokerage posting—but the core roles and priorities differ.

Technically: be comfortable with TMS, Excel, and basic SAP or posting systems; know how to read manifests, weights, fuel compartment and safety-equipment checks, and customs paperwork. You will also use Word, Outlook, and OneNote.

Soft skills: clear phone/email communication with carriers and customers, quick problem-solving for delays/damage, and attention to detail for manifests and inspection reports. Being organized and calm during peak dispatch times matters more than fancy degrees.
