A typical day mixes hands-on machining with planning and checks. You spend hours at a lathe cutting, shaping, and finishing metal or plastic parts to exact dimensions, then measure them with calipers or micrometers.

You also read or update engineering drawings (often AutoCAD or SolidWorks files), run tests, record results in technical reports, and coordinate any tooling or part needs with suppliers so production keeps moving.

Expect SolidWorks and AutoCAD for reading or making part drawings, and ANSYS or MATLAB when parts need stress analysis or testing data. Revit is less common but used if parts fit building systems.

On the shop floor you’ll use manual and CNC lathes, measuring tools, and sometimes CAM software that reads SolidWorks/AutoCAD to generate cutting paths for CNC machines.

You collaborate with design, QA, and manufacturing engineers to turn drawings into parts. That means reviewing design documents, flagging impossible features, and suggesting changes to meet tolerances or reduce cost.

You also help test and validate prototypes, prepare technical reports about failures or adjustments, and update engineering documentation so the next run goes smoother.

AI helps with routine tasks—generating CNC code, suggesting tool paths, or spotting errors in drawings—but it won’t replace hands-on setup, fixturing, or judgement about cuts. Always verify AI-generated CNC programs by dry-running on the machine and checking tool limits.

Use AI to speed drafting or calculations (MATLAB scripts, CAM suggestions), then test, measure, and document results. Never run unverified programs on a loaded machine or rely on AI for safety-critical decisions.

Start with a community college or trade school program that teaches machine tool technology and CNC operation; those programs usually cover reading engineering drawings in AutoCAD or SolidWorks and basic CAM. Apprenticeships give hands-on experience with mentors and often place you in a shop faster.

If self-teaching, focus on safety, measurement skills, and basic machining first. Then learn CNC programming, practice on simulators, and study ANSYS or MATLAB basics for testing and validation. Employers value documented shop hours and certifications.

A turner specialises in lathe work—cutting cylindrical parts, threads, and bores. Machinist is broader: milling, drilling, grinding, and lathe work across different machines. CNC operator mainly runs machine programs written in CAM or G-code.

Turners often need deep skill with turning tools and setups; machinists need broader multi-axis skills and might use SolidWorks/AutoCAD more for complex parts. CNC operators may rely more on CAM software and less on manual setup skills.
