Do hands-on exercises where you set up a joint, choose the correct filler metal, and weld to the blueprint. Shops often pair newbies with a journeyman for a few weeks to check measurements and teach typical tolerances.
You must know fire suppression basics: where extinguishers are, how to use them, and emergency shutdowns for gas/oxygen. The job also requires safe handling of filler metals and shielding gases and proper ventilation for fumes.

Measure and inspect accurately. Being able to check grooves, angles, gap allowances, and spot metal imperfections with a micrometer or caliper saves time and rework. Most weld problems start with poor fit-up or wrong dimensions.
Combine that with learning to read blueprints and choose the right filler metal. If your parts fit to spec and you use the correct filler and heat, the welding itself becomes much easier and the final inspection passes reliably.
