You record results in Excel or SAP, write a detailed inspection report in Word, and communicate findings by email or Outlook to engineers, contractors, or supervisors. You also follow safety rules (radiation protocols when using X‑ray) and may supervise NDT trainees on the job.
Start with the core NDT tools: dye-penetrant kits for surface testing, ultrasonic testers (GE Sensing & Inspection Technologies Rhythm UT or similar) for internal flaws, and basic radiography equipment if your shop uses it. Learn instrument calibration against standards too.
On software, learn Microsoft Excel and Word for reports and data, Outlook for communication, and SAP if your employer tracks inspections in an ERP. Some shops use Fractal Concept SoftScan for radiograph analysis and PowerPoint to present findings.
You match the test to the material, the expected defect, and the applicable code or procedure. For surface cracks use dye-penetrant; for internal defects use ultrasonic or radiography; for thin or complex parts you might pick phased-array ultrasonics (echo-pattern analysis).
Codes and standards (company, ASME, AWS, etc.) dictate acceptable tests and acceptance criteria. You also check material properties and conditions before choosing the method.

Wages vary with certification, experience, industry (oil & gas and nuclear pay more), and location. Specialized NDT skills and supervisory roles push you toward the higher range.
Begin with basic welding knowledge and NDT entry courses: visual inspection, dye-penetrant, magnetic particle, ultrasonic, and radiography basics. Many employers want ASNT (American Society for Nondestructive Testing) or CSWIP/PCN certifications for specific methods.
Get hands-on practice with calibration and with instruments like GE Rhythm UT. Entry-level roles as an NDT technician or trainee under a certified inspector are common paths. Track your hours and exams toward ASNT or employer-required certifications.
A welder builds the joint; a welding inspector examines welds to verify they meet codes and specifications. An NDT technician performs tests (ultrasonic, radiography, dye-penetrant) but may not have authority to accept or reject work.
A welding inspector interprets test results against standards, prepares the inspection report, and often communicates acceptance decisions to stakeholders. Inspectors may also supervise NDT trainees and maintain quality and safety standards.
Learning to interpret ultrasonic echo patterns and radiographs gives the biggest immediate boost. That skill directly finds internal flaws other methods miss and is used on many inspections.
Pair that with proper calibration practice and accurate recording in Excel/Word. Being able to explain a radiograph or UT scan clearly to engineers or clients—showing the flaw, its size, and acceptance code—makes you much more valuable.
