Create and edit patterns

Create and edit patterns in Adobe Illustrator — with the four heights of help laid out: do it now, make it easier for the next person to accept, work out the right move when you are stuck, and learn the pattern so it stops coming back.

The four heights

The same task, four distances: today's deadline, the next reviewer, the stuck moment, the pattern.

We need a seamless repeating tile of the new background pattern for the website hero. Create a vector pattern swatch that repeats without visible seams at 1920x400, use the approved palette of navy, teal and cream, and export a high-resolution SVG plus the AI file. Confirm the pattern scales cleanly to 2x for retina.

Improve — make it easier to accept

Before I hand this pattern to front-end, make it approval-ready: show the repeat boundary, mark any overlaps that could create moiré at screen scale, surface the tile size and the spacing math, and flag elements that should be flattened or kept editable for theming.

Decide — diagnose the stuck moment

The pattern tile shows a visible seam when tiled in Chrome

I created the pattern swatch, but when developers tiled it in Chrome there’s a faint seam at the right edge. The tile is 160px wide using navy circles and teal lines. I don’t know whether the seam is from stray anti-aliased strokes, artboard misalignment, or overlapping shapes. What’s the most likely cause and the simplest fix I can do now before the dev handoff?

Become — change the pattern

We redo patterns for each project instead of reusing rules

Every campaign we rebuild similar repeating graphics from scratch and lose hours re-solving seams, spacing and scale. Where do we consistently waste time—tile math, export settings, or inconsistent layer organization—and what one template or rule will cut 50% of that work on future patterns?

Every task here came from the work, not from a feature list — which is why the prompts name what you want done and never the button that does it. The tool changes; the work does not.
