Create and edit custom symbols

Create a master symbol for the illustrated mascot variations. Take the three mascot poses on artboard 4, combine them into one editable symbol with linked instances for color and pose swaps, name it Mascot-Master, and replace the six spot illustrations with instances so the marketing team can switch poses without new files.

Before I release the symbol library to marketing, make the custom symbols easy to customize. Add a short guide that explains which sublayers are safe to recolor, which groups must remain intact to preserve alignment, and list any rasterized elements inside the symbol that will not scale cleanly.

I made a custom mascot symbol and edited one instance to tweak the ear, but other instances didn’t update. The creative director will ask why the hero page still shows the old ear. What likely caused the instance to be a detached copy rather than linked, what do I disclose to the director about scope, and how do I reattach or propagate the change without breaking the layouts?

Designers keep duplicating custom symbols for minor tweaks, fragmenting our symbol library and creating version hell during campaign updates. It slows rollout and makes A/B tests inconsistent. What policy and lightweight naming or folder practice will stop copying, encourage linked instances, and make symbol updates reliable for the whole brand team?
