Create and refine layer blending

I need layer blends refined on 50 retouch files. For each portrait, create a dodge-and-burn layer with soft light blending at 30% opacity, add a skin-smoothing layer using frequency separation with luminosity blend to protect texture, and use a color lookup layer set to color blend to correct the warmth. Flatten a copy for archives and export the final as high-res JPEGs for proofing.

Before I hand the retouches to the creative director, make the blend interactions clear and non-destructive. Label each blend layer with purpose—dodge, burn, texture, color—use clipping masks where a blend should only affect skin, and adjust opacities so the before/after toggle shows a subtle but visible improvement. Flag any files where blend modes darken eyes or muddy hair that would make the creative director pause.

I applied a dodge-and-burn layer in soft light at 35% opacity on a celebrity portrait and the client called back saying the eyes look unnaturally bright. The project lead expects me to fix it without changing the overall skin shaping. I don’t know whether the issue is blend mode, layer opacity, or where the layer mask is feathered. What’s the most likely culprit and the fastest targeted fix to preserve the skin work while calming the eyes?

Over multiple campaigns I deliver retouches where blend modes or opacities accidentally shift facial features or color and each drives reviewer comments.
