Rename a document

I uploaded a student essay saved as Essay Final.docx and need it to appear with the assignment title instead of the file name. Rename the document to Critical Essay — Gonzalez — History 210 and notify Professor Lee and the student Maria with a short note that the file is ready for grading. Do this before 5 p.m. today so the grader can start.

Before I send the renamed file to Professor Lee, make the title obvious for the grader. Put the course and student name at the start, follow with version number and submission date, and add a small cover line inside the doc: ‘Final for grading — do not edit’. Flag any filenames that still use generic labels like Draft or v3 so the grader won’t open the wrong copy.

I meant to rename Maria’s essay with her name and course but accidentally used the same title as another file and replaced it. I don’t know if the overwritten file can be restored, and Maria’s submission still shows the old name. What’s the fastest way to recover the lost file and how should I rename going forward so this doesn’t happen again when multiple TAs manage uploads?

Across the semester we lose time because TAs rename files inconsistently and sometimes overwrite submissions. The root causes seem to be no naming standard, mixed personal and shared folders, and everyone renaming directly in the folder. What simple convention and permission change would stop overwrites, make grader workloads visible, and require minimal retraining for eight TAs?
